England vs Italy (Group D) Saturday 14th June 2014

Btw, I don't think Rooney was terrible. I thought he was alright, did some good things, could've given Baines more support. Just not sure why the BBC pundits seem so anxious for him to displace players who did better than he did.

Leave him at left-wing or replace him with Lallana/Barkley. Don't touch Sterling & Sturridge ffs.

Or maybe you could look at the goal scoring charts and see he was the 5th highest (English) top scorer and maybe he deserves a shot?
The Premier League is one thing, and he's a decent player, but I don't see him doing anything for England at this level, not now or ever. He can pass it all day long and look good, but he's totally ineffectual. Deserves a shot? Maybe, but do you think we'll ever see a meaningful one from him?

"at this level"?

You do realise the premier league is probably the first or second best league in the world? It IS the highest level. And he scored those goals playing for Southampton, not ManCity/Chelsea/Liverpool etc.

Yes, at this level. Meaning at a WC finals against top sides like Italy. He might do ok in qualifiers against the likes of Moldova, but not at this level. I hope he might prove me wrong, but I just don't see it.

glen hoddle is the most objectionable. sitting there like some wise old master but his last gig was wolves until the fans turned on him for being shit

but he did analyse the game more than the rest on either channel (Wolves shit, being in the league they were , one you rarely play you're way out of) and manager of England last time they played anything decent .

on the pitch ? an Englishman with few peers in their history , so, qualified .

Tim Cahill, Darren Anderton, Matthew Upson and Emile Heskey go to bed safe in the knowledge that they've still scored more World Cup goals than Wayne (4, 1, 1, 1 in order)

Wilshere for Henderson made no sense and he achieved fuck all.

Gave them width by the yard and they used it.

Welbeck put in killer passes, worked hard and did well - Milner, with talent.

Rooney was, well, not world class. He just isn't.

The way the crowd were it was like playing an away game...i may have misheard it but it seemed like england players got booed a fair bit just for being on the ball. did they talk about that on the post match analysis? seems like a lot of brazillians hate england.

He did. It was one of his better England performances.

I'm a fan of Baines but he was disappointing tonight.

Baines and Rooney on that left side was the chink in defensive play, Italy exploited that hugely in the first half. The switch in second half (Welbeck over to the left) only marginally improved matters, Baines had a stinker.

There were some great England performances out there, but
I would have taken Rooney off and brought Lambert on for the last 25 minutes.

If we are to lose, I would rather lose on the back of good performances from the young players. We are unlikely to go far in this competition, I hope the media don't turn on Hodgson because he has at least had the courage to run with the younger talent.

If you analyse the stats you will see it was a decent England performance, the telling differences were the quality in the shots/chances Italy had (hit bar and post), the experienced heads of most of their players, the class of Ballotelli (Rooney by way of contrast is not a world class player) and the defensive strategy of keeping in front of England attacks (zero offsides).
