Costa Rica v England (Group D) Tuesday 24th June 2014

The English public have had the right expectations for this tournament and I don't think anyone's crying too much today. There's been a shift in attitudes to what we think we can achieve I think, and we'll see England fans being hopeful rather than presumptuous for the next Euros.
We don't win stuff all the time but it's nice that we do occasionally. Rugby isn't even our national sport and we won the World Cup in that I think. I don't know much about that sport though, I guess Wales have won it loads of times becaue it's such a big thing there.

thats the point he was making - we're shitter than two not great teams (three even)
That's what he meant.
Perhaps, but I think there was a subtle difference, in that he was saying "we are better than these teams and should have beaten them because of that". He expected us to beat them, whereas a lot of other people didn't - some of us thought we could, but didn't expect it.

Nah, they've won the 6 nations a few times, but not the World Cup, where they excel at 'heroic failure'.

There were people crying in the pub I was in. I mean they were genuinely upset.

I think they'd read some of ddraig's scathing posts, the poor buggers. :(

They've never won the Rugby World Cup? It doesn't make sense. Even other countries with tiny populations like New Zealand have won that according to Wikipedia. It's the Welsh national sport. How come they so regularly underachieve on the big stage and why do they think they're such an important rugby country then?

This is all really confusing.

They're delusional. And spend more time practising their god awful dirge of a national anthem than practising sport. They got to the semi final of the last rugby World Cup but their captain got sent off for a horrific tackle pretty early on. They would have got smashed in the final anyway if they'd made it through.

I see you're just as insightful as a rugby critic as you are football and cricket.

"I don't think there were any great teams... Are Uruguay a great team? Are Costa Rica a great team? I don't think so"

Neither are England Alan, you great twat. And you just named the two teams that bloody well qualified from the group
Think the wider point they've all missed is that why were Tabarez and Pinto able to set their teams up in such a way as to ensure they got results and negated the opposition, whilst England got caught by the same sucker punch twice...

After englands first match i was fancying Italy to go on and win the thing.

In retrospect I think england made italy look good.

England looked pretty disjointed - i think part of the problem is trying to shoe-horn rooney into the side and the lack of a midfield holding player. Lots of good young players - but they are all attackers.
