Domestic and European Rugby

Paid the second lot of my France 2023 money over today :)

Excited for a weekend in Marseilles taking in England v Argentina, Scotland v South Africa at the Stad Velodrome.

First weekend of the tournament too so will also watch France v New Zealand on a big screen somewhere I’m sure. And Wales v Fiji is that weekend too

Off to Exeter Chiefs v Munster today in the last 16 of the champions cup. Sadly a lot of Munster’s best forwards are injured.

Chiefs will be targeting this game I think as they’re borderline for the playoffs domestically.

I think it’s Topsy Ojo who does the premiership highlights with Flats, ITV4 around 7pm.

Bristol v Sale is on channel 4 today
You're right, Shanks is on with him for something else. tbh I only really know flats, love his commentaries.

ta, will check the Bristle match although I should be out doing the garden

Sad end(?) to Hallam Amos's career last night. He was playing superbly against Munster last night but he did he hamstring. Such a sad way to see such an exciting player finish his career. Why didn't he get more Wales caps?

I was always a big fan of his. Can understand why he’s retired though.

The Heineken QFs are this week. Think I’ll miss the Saturday ones as out at a birthday.

Got my ticket for the last prem game of the season - Chiefs v Quins. Exeter my local team but hate their branding and their style of rugby. I’ll be going along supporting Quins. I enjoyed my last visit to Sandy Park watching Munster in the Heineken though, not sure I’ll be getting a season ticket though - cost and time commitment too much. Will go along to a few games a season when it’s an interesting opponent.

Anyone watch the League Challenge cup St Helens v Wigan? Superb game some lovely tries really worth watching. Fucking brutal game though surprised there aren't more injuries.

Missed that but St Helen’s Vs Wigan is the rivalry in League isn’t it? Used to love watching Sam Tompkins play fullback for Wigan, he was class. Yup, brutal game. If union is having issues with brain injuries wait till league players start speaking up.

Minis rugby is run better in Ireland than this https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/61394143

Urc not working cos fans don’t go to away games…Welsh fans don’t even go to home games. Keep the dragons.

It's an absolute shambles but glad it's getting actual press coverage as it's been on the cards for years. Don't know if it'll come to anything as I fear the damage is irreparable but at least a few blazers might fuck off back to the club house.

Looks like Scarlets and Cardiff want the O’s disbanded. Obviously want the players.

Question would a team in North Wales work, and if so could there be one in West and East Wales?

Because he was never good enough.

No chance of a N. Wales team working financially. Population centres are small and geographically isolated from one another. It's another WRU fever dream.

And it's the WRU that wants the Os disbanded. It owns the Dragons and partially owns CRFC. The scarlets have more clout politically so they won't go, leaving only one candidate

What's the story with London Irish rugby club???

Is it true that Irish rugby fans from the republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland who are roman catholic don't support London Irish and the majority of London Irish rugby club fans are Church of Ireland or other reformist church members?

I don't mean to insight religious sectarianism it's just I am a aussie born rugby fan who's Mother is from Donegal and step dad is from west Belfast and I don't know much about British club rugby

I don't know any of the history, but I did like it when London Irish played their home games neither London nor Ireland, but Reading.

I’m not Irish and definitely don’t know the full history but my understanding is that the exiles teams (London Welsh, London Scottish and Irish) were originally set up to cater for the Celtic diaspora in London.

I think that rugby in Ireland is traditionally a private school thing especially in Dublin but obviously that's a big generalisation and perhaps more of a historical thing.

I imagine that the fans in Ireland follow their province not an English club though. My impression as an English rugby fan is that rugby, with a national team for the entire of island was less about religious affiliation than class.

But as I said I’m not Irish and I hope that the sport crosses over barriers and helps I unite people :)

As rugby in Ireland is a non sectarian sport played on an All Ireland basis, London Irish would have reflected that. Elpenor is right that rugby in Ireland has a definite class distinction, (in that the private schools, Dublin, Cork and north Down, Belfast clubs are very middle class while Limerick and the rural clubs are more cross class entities.) but it’s also a minority sport. GAA, Hurling, and Football dwarf it in size. So most emigrants to London would have been drawn to GAA clubs or followed football clubs. Those from a rugby background would have followed Irish.

That’s all changed with streaming, and cheap flights it’s easier for me to continue to support my old club and watch my province than pony up to watch Irish these days.

Sober look at the deep shit Welsh rugby is in.
Sad fact is that anyone with an ounce of knowledge about the game here has been predicting exactly this outcome for years. The WRU and their utter ineptitude are the problem and they'll take the game down with them, at which point Dai from Abercwmffycoff RFC's blazer rights will be worth absolutely fuck all.

One thing I don’t get is why the regions are so bad on the field.

I understand some of the big structural problems in Welsh rugby. Most of which stem from having a historic club structure too strong to be easily swept aside when professionalisation happened, but too weak to support a pro league. Or sometimes from the lack of separation between the participatory/amateur side of the sport and the pro sport (although you could also make a good argument that the pro sport should be subordinate to the grassroots game).

But even taking all of that into account, the regions shouldn’t be this shit. They have more money than the South Africans and a bigger player base than the Irish and more of both than the Scottish and Italians. They are a lot worse than they should be.

One of the reasons are shit coaches are hired. It was a great day for Ulster when they palmed off Allen Clarke to the Ospreys in 2017.

Haven’t looked back really.
