    Lazy Llama

Does the left understand the working class and how would they answer their concerns?

These days he's on the DWP GEC.

Blimey.

Without wanting to turn this into button's CPSA memory lane thread, what about Steve Cawkwell? He was my absolute favourite (not SWP member -- was always 'Broad Left but neutral'). A really lovely man.

Brought the house down at conference one year by beginning a speech, "In 35AD, the emperor Caligula appointed his horse as a senator. In 1992, Barry Reamsbottom appointed Micky Duggan as a full time official...." :)

Cawkwell works for PCS in Leeds. He's the full-time DWP PCS organiser. And still a sound bloke. He's from Hull so no doubt you were simply extending E Riding solidarity lol.

Yeah, he was secretary of the Benefits Agency branch in Hull while I was secretary of the ES branch. I got to know him in the early 90s, when Reamsbottom & co. arranged to have Steve's branch office raided by Humberside Police. Crazy times. :)

Aye, I remember talking to him and he was on about that, sounded fun. He's still a solid fella and does a fuck of a lot of work as the FT Organiser in our group.

:D

Getting your union office raided by the old bill? Luxury! We used to dream of getting our union office raided by the old bill.... (and so on).

But we were happy.

You lot really left our generation in the shit, should be ashamed with yourselves.

You woulda loved CPSA conferences and PCS conference upto 2004.

And you love us old fucks really.

The remote-controlled tank rolling up the central aisle of the conference hall, attempting to get around standing orders by giving a speech aided by a Sooty puppet ("What's that, Sooty? The National Moderate Group have links with the CIA?"). Poetry. These kids today, they don't know they're born. :(

One of my best mates is a lad name of John Jamieson, former SOC bod..... He's some great tales about Reamsbottom and Duggan et al.

The Sooty puppet thing was when my branch had a motion ruled out of order by the old CPSA rule 10.3 (which meant that not only was an 'out of order' motion not heard, it was also not printed in the conference booklet 'in case of potential legal action'). There was one year (I think it was 1994 or 1995) when the longest debate of the entire national conference was a constitutional amendment to rule 10.3. Mental. :D

And some people just love all that old guff.....

Looks like our generation is going to have no choice about being ultra leftists, hopefully.

That's right. You just concentrate on developing the correct political line at the same age as I was when I was on £50 a night expenses in a variety of seaside resorts. Sounds like a good deal to me.

What would a Jesuit spend £50 a night on, I mean outside SE Asia.:D
