Does the left understand the working class and how would they answer their concerns?

Balls, I harbour a narcissitic desire to throw myself into battle for some grand and poetic cause. ;)
I'd rather dodge bullets than spend my days in some office.
It's one of the reasons I can see the appeal of the military to many young people and it also goes someway to explaining why millions threw themselves into the 1st World War.

Well, that is the usual reaction of someone who's never had to dodge bullets. :)

The romance wears pretty thin, and the poetry tends to sour, once the lead starts flying!

oh i'm sure, i'd shit myself no doubt, still doesn't mean it doesn't have greater appeal than the 9 to 5 routine.

True, and if the experience gives you nothing else, it presents you with an interesting "closed system" example of just how worthless/useless/pointless the officer (for which read "middle") class are.

the people disagreeing with me on this thread have been you (a intellectually illiterate desk jockey), Darios(right wing muppet), LLETSA (Carousel with the fun sapped out him) and Pickman's Model (a stalker of mine that wouldn't actually agree with any of your shit beyond getting to snipe at me).
Hey come on I put a lot of time and effort into disagreeing with you!

Awww have you all stopped arguing ?

It was very entertaining following this thread last night !

I was thinking about whether the Left tends to dismiss working class culture too readily. The Fascists offer a sense of belonging and culture to many working class people that allows them to have a sense of pride and respect in their own customs. I suspect this is what many people voting for the BNP might think.

Perhaps in our eagerness to ensure minority groupings get the additional attention they need we have neglected for too long working class traditions. I think some of resentment people feel towards minorities is the attention and respect their cultural roots get whilst their own culture is trampled under foot, dismissed as imperialistic tradition. Perhaps the left wouldn't go far wrong if it tried to offer people a sense of cultural belonging, real solidarity based on tradition and community, rather than abstract solidarity based on intellectual notions. For instance holding support workshops for the unemployed, and having a day celebrating our british working class traditions.

The BNP have recently been trying to infiltrate the folk world, it's clear they are trying to lay claim to a sense of British identity that many people have become alienated from due to the development of mass consumer culture, the age of the celebrity and individualism. The truth is many of these traditions contain a rich tapestry of working class struggle, there are so many folk songs for instance with this theme, and of course there are left wing folkies who bring this tradition to new audience.

If we look back historically the strongest left wing communities were rooted in an industry, in particular Northern industrial towns. It's these places there now the industry and left wing culture have collapsed where the BNP are making some of their biggest inroads. I’m just thinking perhaps the Left would do well to spend time celebrating British cultural identify in a manner that is progressive rather than xenophobic, it might be a way to connect better with disenfranchised people turning to the fascists.

What do people thin?

Well it depends on what you think left wing values mean. Could it do those things and still be left-wing? It may be half sensible for the BNP to court the Woden Folk and somewhat ironically toy with the notion of how Jesus would vote. I doubt the left would be true to itself if it did the same. If you’re that desperate to appeal to people, just get N-Dubz to endorse it yo.

Besides, the left is meant to be about the inherent instability and inevitable collapse of a society founded on exchange. It rather relies on this piece of speculation and the extent to which people are concerned about the survival of the species. Risky proposition.
