Discussion about UK politics forum

Why can't I make a suggestion?

Are you trying to impose on me what I can and can't suggest  :p

Maybe we should get a mod who can find the time to actually mod UK P&P closely...

because your suggestion itself is based on an imposition. nosher isn't - if you pay attention - denying your right to suggest, he's just disagreeing with the authoritarian nature of your suggestion.....

Feeling way to ill to go out so I'll argue here instead ..

UK politics has a lot of problems - but then so does the entire forum. With a project as big as urban 75, it's impossible to achieve perfection. Especially with as large as diverse a user base as this site has.

I can't, however, take this thread seriously because TeeJay and the B are as guilty of the kind of personal spats that they're accusing others of. This thread is a direct result of TeeJay getting pissed off with Butchers, MoM, Ern and Flimsy. It's so ridiculously agenda-driven that it makes me want to cry when TeeJay tries to hide behind a mask of impartial objective delight in 'good' and 'constructive' debate.

The answer to the problems of uk politics are not going to be provided by the B, TeeJay, me, or anyone else on this thread. Anything we come up with is going to be a continuation of existing personal feuds and relationships.

Whilst I agree a clearing of the air might lead to some consolidation and agreement that some of the anti-RESPECT threads are not contributing to debate as are some RESPECT threads.... Serious moderation please :) ;)

yes, i missed you and your pithy contributions.

How could you survive a week abroad knowing that nate was busy working away on increasing the net level of humour, wit and intelligence on urban. Personally, I couldn't spend time sitting on a beach in the sun with my partner knowing that a genius of such an impressive degree - such a man only comes along once in a generation - was studiously working for the benefit and enjoyment of his adopted online community. The frustration would drive me mad! :(

You're all in denial, none of you have really admitted that you as a group or as individuals (as a group, you are for lack of a better way to describe you - the significant posters on UK P&P) make it a shit and inaccessible forum that a large group of people don't like.

It is filled with bollocks most people don't care about (SWP, Respect, Trots), you come across as nasty shits who sling abuse at the first sign of something you don't like and do so in a swarming manner.
I'd like to apologise to everyone for the contribution I have made recently to throwing abuse around. I intend to try my best from now on to 'do as I would be done by'.

Can I use that as a reference :D

When Respect fail in the election it'll all quieten down again on that front. ;)

I refer to the fact that this looks like you flinging yer 'andbag after that 'where did you go to school' thread' and the Anarchist's Federation one (and on the latter, btw, I felt you were asking entirely legitimate questions), eliciting a response was bizarre in it's hysteria).
Flinging my handbag? I think I have raised a perfectly legitimately question about the fact that over 50% of the threads (at the time of posting) were about one tiny left-wing sect (most public forums would call this "spamming" or "duplicate threads" and that the default mode of debate on UKp&p seemed to be ad hominems and throwing personal abuse - something outlawed in the u75 FAQ.

I have also subsequently started a number of threads in that forum - on health, education and crime - so I haven't "flounced" either. I think it is valuable to hear from a wider cross section of people on urban75 rather than the tiny clique of people who have taken over UKp&p for their own vendettas and scream abuse at everyone else who sets foot there if they say anything they don't agree with. And then they call this "robust" debate.

I agree that binning, banning and ongoing tough moderating woulf improve the quality of that forum by about 1000% and allow a far larger numvber of people to take part in political debate there, rather than abunch of self appointed bullies.

It would also repair your bruised ego.

So you don't even take part in them and you want to change them? Ffs, let people do their own thing.
Why don't they go and do their "own" thing on their "own" forum? For example one called "the SWP forum"?

Why should they? They're not stopping others from contributing - they may be discouraging them but that's not their fault - so why the fuck should they stop posting just because your interests differ from theirs? I find SWP threads dull, I also find green party cack dull - doesn't lead to me calling for either to be banned/binned!

I could now start accusing you of all sorts of hidden agenda and make my entire argument revolve around nosos and nasty and snide remarks about you, but I won't. I won't because that is precisely the kind of ad hominem mudslinging that you want to drag everyone down into, and which you are saying people have a right to do if they feel like. The fact is every forum has rules and there are rules on urban75 about personal abuse which are simply ignored by half the posters who monopolise UK p&p and regard it as their own little domain. I am faced with either being driven out by people who seem to love to drag everyone down into the gutter with them and walking away, or to try and appeal to the far larger number of reasonable urban75 people to voice their opinion about this situation and hopefully extert some kind of collective pressure to change things for the better. You continue to try and make free speech arguments to defend the use of vile and stupid personal abuse as a valid debating tactitic and label anyone who disagrees as a dictator. Making comparisons with fascists is the sign of someone who is really losing the argument, and I will leave it to everyone else here to weigh up who has been more convincing on this thread. It seesm that instead of addressing the issues some people would (yet again) try and turn the whole debate into an attack on one person and throw abuse and false accusations at them, instead of actually debate or prodice a coherent argument.

This thread though isn't you making impartial suggestions as to how p&p could be improved, it is a result of, and continuation of, the arguments you've had with me and butchers and others.
