Discussion about UK politics forum

meanoldman said:
oisleep, sihhi, ernestolynch, freethepeeps, Squatticus and TeeJay are the people who've started SWP-related threads on the front page of UK P&P. Out of 31 non-sticky threads that doesn't seem that bad. And TJ is special so the thread he started about the SWP doesn't actually count. ;)

My point was, what proportion are started by SWP members?

at risk of being a cliche, have you got a source for that?
To be honest no, but I read it on the Socialist Alliance independents e-list. If was posted by one of the RESPECT bashers so I tend to believe it. Apparently he complained to the Observer about how his position was represented.

i don't see that makes any difference.. what if an equivalent politician in another party - Labour, say - held deeply racist views? if they promised to shut the fuck up about it, would you ignore it and cast your vote in their favour?

Are you saying that 'deeply racist views' are equivalent to being pro-life?

Coz I think they're different kettles of fish, coming from different perspectives, and to be dealt with in entirely different ways.

For example, I think I can work with someone I agree with on almost all issues except a woman's right to choose.

I've heard the position explained like that as well. It is obviously challenged with 'so for Saddam?'

I suspect the answer is no.

emy - you are typical (IMO) of the sort of poster who would make a really good moderator. Surely you see the problem though?
I can see some problems but don’t feel it is a particularly abusive environment, but then I tend to not take things all that seriously. After all this is just a website I visit to have some fun and possible learn a few things

Oh and thanks but I think I would be too soft as a moderator and let too much past, guess I’m just a soppy liberal at heart.

Will you now be honest about your reasons for starting the AF thread?
My motivation was to work out if there was any specific ideological reasons behind various things that certain people were saying. It did help clarify a few things to me and help understand where certain people were coming from.

TJ - your motives were to hope for some dirt on BA in the early hours (when you'd just lost a spat with him)?

How wrong do you claim I am?

(this is not meant to be arsey, but while we're cleansing!) :)

I have just explained that I don't have a list of who is and who isn't an SWP "member". I feel that you should answer this question as presumably you have a better idea of who is and isn't an SWP member than I do.

Are you claiming to be a mind reader now?
Are you saying I am lying? What exactly are you trying to say?

the question was rhetorical. The answer meaning that an SWP forum wouldn't stop the vast majority of RESPECT/ SWP threads.

FWIW, I've posted one - 'My latest RESPECT news'. I don't think it was considered to be supportive or oppositional, and (again) FWIW I think it was a good, though short, thread! :)

No, neither. I am stating something and asking you if it is true or not.

Like when someone says Arsenal immortal?

The question mark means its a question.

It would be interesting and entertaining yes

Go on... :D :p

OK - I started a thread on 28/5/04 about the new England top, asking if it was reversible, and then I wrote:

'No, the white one. I was ironing it, and I noticed the Cross of St George instead of the 3 Lions.'

In the Marxism 2004 thread on the same day, you wrote:

'Yes. yes, yes- I really wanna meet butchersapron
He's such a man I hope he'll be wearing his reversable England top'

This indicates to me that you assume it was his top I was ironing

Not that anyone else is the slightest bit interested in what you think, but since you seem unable to recollect anything that you posted more than 5 minutes ago, and you did ask me to show you...

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm....
My comment referred to the 'England Flags on Cars' thread- I don't go into sports but thanks for that little insight into how your mind works...
I really couldn't give a shite whether you iron or not just as I couldn't care less about England football team or sports in general...

You're a 'lefty'?
  I thought you were a WESPEC' drone.
Like your comments on the SWP increasing support for the BNP (which, sorry I still can't get my head round) I think ernesto has done more for RESPECT than any other poster here... :p

You and your partner are both Cliffites. Give me an example of one person deciding to support the RUC because of my anti-Trot vitriol.

Oh, and perhaps you'd like to check the results of the poll you mentioned. Plenty of people have 'got their head around' that one.

Confused as to what my partner has to do with this argument
I think I gave myself as an example though I admit I've never had so much pressure to vote one way from friends and work collegues in my life

They may have done but the logic of the argument escapes me when both RAR and the ANL have done so much good in the past  :(

The very fact that you cannot understand the argument makes you a perfect SWP hack.

quite frankly, ernie, you'd have to traverse the universe to find one person who'd been electorally swayed in any direction by the power of your rhetoric, but...SilentNate a Cliffite? have you lost the plot a smidgeon?
That's like, well, it's like you positing a positive alternative position of your own, rather than just doing the Tories work for them and bashing any 'Leftie' within a 5 mile radius!
and that could never happen, could it?

Ironically, altho' he ain't, and him suuggesting to me once that he joined reduced me to howls of laughter, in a way Nate's politics ain't THAT far removed from the swappies, like mine ain't as regards international revolution over reform.
