Cricket World Cup 2023

i've never fully understood DLS, but don't understand how Pakistan are ahead at the moment.

without breaks they would have needed 402 off 50 overs.

they have currently got 200 off 25 and a bit overs, which is less than half the score on slightly more than half the original number of overs.

i thought DLS was supposed to set a target slightly higher than score in the same proportion to number of overs, recognising that it's easier to get (say) 200 off 25 overs than it is to get 400 off 50 overs.

have i misunderstood something?

Only one wicket down counts a lot. The more wickets down, the higher the target.

It looks at historical data and calculates from that, but where I think it is flawed is with high targets like this one. No guarantees Pak could have accelerated even with wickets in hand given they were already going more or less at full-pelt. We see this in t20 a lot, where a blistering start can be hard to maintain, let alone build on.

That said, you would say that Pakistan made a brilliant start to their huge chase. Just that they still had an awfully long way still to go.

So I don't disagree with the result (if it ends here), but I do think it is very tough on NZ.

So 1 run behind the asking rate from 3 more balls. I hardly see how its tough on NZ.

England current Run Rate: 3.32
• Required RR: 6.29
• Last 5 ov (RR): 12/1 (2.40)

I mean it's stunning CGI to cover up the fact that the England team has been kidnapped and replaced with the Nunnery Wood Secondary School 2nd XI...

I think it's tough on NZ because there was still all to play for, but now they've lost. Scoring 400+ is hard, even if you've got to 200 at the half-way point.

If it stops now it would prob mean a defeat for Pak as the target from half the overs would almost certainly be higher than half the runs. I think DLS always works against team chasing.

Only just seen result updated on BBC. Still fail to see how this is tough, let alone "very tough" on NZ.

Gotta feel for NZ. Lost the rugby world cup due to a totally incompetent referee's second time at sending them out and now climate change accounts for the cricket side after scoring 400.

england only losing by 33 runs

as one of my old teachers used to say, going from worse to bad is at least an improvement...

meh.

I gave up once Ali holed out, although it looks like I missed the tail, not so much wagging, but at least waving a bit.

Hold on! If Pak scored 200 off 25, for loss of one wicket, they were more than on target for 400in 50! PAK were odds on to win that over 50 overs!

What was incompetent about Barnes' performance?

Love this comment from the guardian OBO coverage

It really is about time ECB takes note and cracks down. What the hell are those guys in the ideation room doing.
Its high time they came up with a new format of cricket. That should fix things.
