WTF is this shite?

"6th March 1989: British royalist and republican forces in Northern Ireland launched a massive co-ordinated counter-attack across the province against the invading Irish Republic forces.

Under relentless air attack by Royalist Army Air Lynx helicopters and Republican Air Force Tornadoes flying out of bases in Scotland, Irish AFV's were targeted in an around the clock bombardment before Royal Irish and Ulster Defence Force troops launched a ground assault on the night of the 5th.

Shell shocked Irish Defence Force troops streamed back across the border as territory in both the east and south of Ulster was recovered by British forces."

doesnt appear to make an awful lot of sense epsecially considering the irish defence forces are not exactly a conventional threat to anything really

Newly (self) promoted Field Marshal Generalissimo Supreme Commander kebabking, which side are you on? :D

As you know I'm an even-handed chap, moderation and all that - but put it this way: people who wear sports clothing without actually doing any sports, they are wasting their money on pension contributions. ;)

Oh, and a new Joint Fires Live Range - it's called 'London'.

I doubt our navy could stop the Russians bringing tanks to the Port of Tyne from Murmansk.

The Russian Navy never goes anywhere without a tug - and often it just doesn't go anywhere. Book with P&O instead - there's a chance they may even arrive.

Oh, and its el Presidente if you don't mind - or, if we're being more informal, The Great Leader. I don't want to get prescriptive about all this of course - I have no objection to being described as the Great Moral and Intellectual Figure of Our Age, or indeed as The Dread Lord of Might and Power.

Very kind of you to stand on that plastic sheeting....

Oooh yes please - full cosplay obvs. - lace collars, ecstatic ranting in fields, massive expropriation of stolen land...and digging.

1. Starving but peaceful demonstrators descend on Whitehall.

2. Prime Minister Rees-Mogg - for it is he - deploys units of the Parachute Regiment.

3. A new era of universal brotherhood opens up.

Nigel Farage is on a speaking tour in October, spotted a flyer for his night at the theatre in Hunstanton, a snip at £26.50 per ticket. Now, maybe the speaking tour is a ruse to get him going round the country whipping up Brexiteers angry at whatever there is to be angry about at the time. The end comes with the forces of reactionary conservatism seizing town halls and radio stations, supported by the armed forces who step in to restore order. Farage is named interim premier, the BBC is silenced, the Guardian banned and U75 members rounded up.

it's been suggested on the will brexit happen thread that the process may spark a civil war.

do you think it's on the cards and if so why?

Funnily enough, this is something that has been occupying my thoughts occasionally of late.

Nothing to with Brexit per se, but to do with the vast and increasing inequality between rich and poor, and the vast disparity in salary levels. Add in unaffordable housing costs and general inflation, and you are heading for a major civil unrest situation. It takes a lot to get the British people onto the streets, I'm not talking about the usual malcontent rentamob, I'm talking about ordinary everyday people.

There is a view, with which I agree, that too much has been given to the 'has', than to the 'has not'. Reductions in Corporation Tax may attract industry, but is it worth attracting? CT reduction benefits every company, and reduces the amount to the exchequer. Dropping the top rate of Income Tax, not at least indexing the 1% band of NI contributions. All of those things added up, is probably equal to eliminating the lack of funding in the NHS.

First glance, I thought £2.65 was a bit steep to see him... :)

well if you did storm a military base and get past the clouds of gloom and depression that hang around armouries spend hours cleaning rifles and see how happy you are. you then discover any ammo is in a bunker miles away you've also know equipped your valiant milita with the SA80 that will stop working if you breathe on it wrong then fall apart:(
:D

One of the specs for the SLR was that it had to be 'squaddie proof'. It was pretty much, and deadly accurate. Lovely gun. As Medics we had SMGs. :(

Don't they have H&K SA80s that actually work now?

Yeah, the L85 is now among the world's most reliable rifles - it's had two upgrades since it came into service, and the serious problems were cured with the first upgrade.

I had a one shatter when it banged against a land rover in about -20c in Bosnia in 1995, but no problems since.

Add to that the population growth, declining real wages, rising rents & the fall in home ownership, increasing inequality, poverty and homelessness, intra-elite conflicts, decreasing social mobility

It's still unlikely but definitely becoming more of a possibility.

It takes a lot to get the GBP onto the streets, but the way things are heading, I can see it happening.

Quite funny really. Eire is probably the only country the army could conquer now, even then it would probably be a struggle.

not against the might of the Irish defence forces :D.
a rather bemused paintball site in Ireland got a visit from some Russian because having a couple of surplus chieftans due to the limitations of conventional weapons in Europe treaty it had the heaviest armour in Ireland:facepalm::D

Half remember a story a sheltered housing tenant told me years ago. He'd been an MP in the Irish Army during the 60s.

Someone from supplies had been caught taking knackered old equipment. Other small arms were missing after an inventory.

They'd thought it was being sent to the IRA but allegedly it turned up in Wales.

thats a typical night in colchester but not exactly a civil war

Well yes, but we only fought each other when there was no one else to fight.

The proudest day of the RAMC was a battle royal in Aldershot, Medics against the Paras. The Medics won, and regrouped at the Cambridge Military Hospital, to treat the injured Paras as they came in. :D

The good old Fuedal system. You know where you stand with that. You were shit and you owned shit but at least they were honest.

#goodolddays

I'm not even sure what General Bollocks was on about in that Independent article - didn't the Tories already make massive cuts to the military and try to cheat troops out of their pensions? I think the officers are a lot more likely to find themselves being executed than Corbyn...
