90s techno thread

old internet mate of mine. not a fan of his music lol. that cheerleader one is ok, but the best thing he did was I Love Horses:

yeah he was a bit hit and miss, I only had that stormtrooper in drag ep. I liked the track I posted by him though, although that was when I had my booty bass thing going on.

Here's where I've got to so far with the Spotify playlist of the thread. I've swapped some tracks for others by the same artist, if Spotify doesn't have them/I can't find them. Let me know if you want an update etc. I'll add more when I get a round tuit. Feel free to add your streaming service of choice. I reckon whatsit, that one that streams FLAC? That one would be great, as it has more of a choice than Spotify. Hint hint.

eta: it's up to date. I'll add it page by page from here. :)

Spotify.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to the thread. It's made a great playlist of a genre that I love but haven't heard loads of the tracks on here.

Made me smile that RAC is mentioned. I chose that name. It started out with the National Breakdown EP. Warp paid for the studio time after I had recommended Kid Unknown to them. I was DJing at Doncaster Warehouse every week and it was one of the venues in South Yorks that was playing Rave really early. 90, 91. He used to come over from Manchester to play there and I found out that he worked at Eastern Bloc. Warp had a massive rivalry with them, mainly via Pete Tong's weekly chart, we did it one week them the next and we tried to outdo each other.

I found out that he had a track, got a demo, took it to Rob and Steve and they were looking for another Nightmares type thing, so they released it. Warp hadn't really found its direction at that time. They owe so so much to George from NoW. Steve would say the same.

So I got some studio time and didn't really want to be in there on my own so I asked Chris and Rich, who were Asterix and Space, to come too. Richard, Ash and Chris made up RAC and because of Rave music at that time and playing on pirate radio and gigs out we were into breakbeats and so National Breakdown Ep it was. I remember the name got proper slammed. I was nothing to do with it by the time it came out. Good times. :)

great story, that RAC track is top notch. Did you have anything to do with Swag too or was that just Chris?

Coincidentally Chris has been spending his isolation well and has recently banged out these 1994 techno mixes, all of them quality:

(have always wondered if he's related to that other notorious Sheffield-based Duckenfield)

bmd have you read this yet?

No, I haven't. I always wondered if someone would write one. What's it like? Do you know Chris, Orang Utan? He's a really nice bloke. There was a mag that came out around the time him and I were working at Warp and it had this bit called Moody DJ in it. Really spot on about working in a record shop. We all thought we were so cool lol. :)

Oh and same about Commander Duckenfield! It's a pretty unique name eh.

The book is ace - one of the best I've read about dance music - really detailed - if you were on the scene in Yorkshire around that time, you'll enjoy recognising all the references and the cringe at the geographical mistakes (not many though)
Don't know Chris - just paid attention to what he did from the early 90s and saw him dj a few times at places like the Fez Club and the wicker arches (? think that's what they were called)
Was the mag The Herb Garden?

I didn't have anything to do with Swag. It was him and Rich at first but then just Chris. Chris had a massive love of house and techno. Dance music in general really and he is a really good dj. Technically and just his ear, I mean. Even amongst people like Parrot and Winston, Dino and Mongoose. Goose was Mink's brother. Mink was an amazing hip hop DJ.

The first day I walked into Warp was a Saturday. I had just moved to Sheffield and I was starting there on the Monday. I walked in and Winston from Forgemasters was listening to the imports that had come in. He kept playing this same one over and over. It was Crystal Waters' Gypsy Woman. To just stand there and listen to him talk about Sheffield techno and Rob Gordon and stuff like that, blew my tiny mind.

It could be mate, I really can't remember. Thanks for the recommendation on the book. I love things like that. My best mate and his girlfriend worked at Trax at around the same time. He has a brilliant Farley Jackmaster Funk story. So mad that we were a part of that history. :)
