90s techno thread

I recently revisited 'it's not from detroit, it's not intelligent... but it's fuckin' avin' it', and found it unexpectedly enjoyable. I was heavily into very bad trance & hardhouse in the late 90s, most of which makes me cringe these days (still the occasional banger) so I was surprised it held up. I think the later london acid stuff got pretty boring though.

Tech-house was one of those scenes were there were good tunes - that SWAG tune a page or so back is a perfect example of good tech-house - but it was very hard for DJs to put an interesting set together. The odd person could manage it (Nils Hess & Richard Summerhayes from Eukatech for example), but all too frequently (and pretty much always since the millenium) tech-house sets seemed to be a functional rhythmic tool for people who'd had one too many pills to move their body to until they realised it was time to go home. In short: can be good in small

yeah it was the attempt at making it a genre in-itself that made it so boring for me. There was plenty of good stuff you could mix together and take a set from techno to house and back again, or vice versa, keeping the whole thing creative and interesting. It just seemed like a cynical attempt to define some new London scene.

I always saw those Jus’ Trax eps, early SWAG etc as being hard house (although that’s a problematic term too). I’m sure everyone on this thread would of had discussions long into the morning on what a particularly problematic track was either techno or house, and then various other terms would be added to give some clarity and a pigeonhole.

a good example from 97 of someone known more for Detroit house heading into techno.

Actually thinking about it tech-house is just house played at a faster (techno) bpm isn’t it? But you have to take all the elements that give house music it’s feeling out in order to play it at that higher speed. And your left with a pretty boring result, especially when you do a whole set of the same thing.

I would rather just listen to UKG tbh

Cologne was good for acid techno

strongly recommend this comp of Cologne acid on Rising High (all culled from the Cologne label DJ.Ungle Fever, and mostly featuring members of Air Liquide...

also this double-pack

I remember an employee at Selectadisc taking her own collection in & selling it off to customers behind the counter. Got that for £2, such a good track.

Will give that a go tomorrow. Looking forward to it. It looks like a great tracklist. Major Problems- 3 of the best EPs of all time. So good.

I got given a few years ago by a work mate. I had Violet Skies already, but this was a nice little bonus.
