The point is (and this may be just media spin) that this woman is now representing more than just the issue she purports, but also as an 'example' to others. Look at me, if even I can do this, then *you* have no excuse...

Guilt-tripping people into feeling lazy *is* *not* *a* *healthy* *way* of achieving your stated political goals - and infact, what this achieves in reality is to bind her cause to that of the establishment. What establishment figure wouldn't jump at the chance to be associated with Ms Hick's campaign? It gives *exactly* the kind of message they wish to push forward.

On another cynical level (and one which hasn't thus far been raised) I'm also sceptical about the effects of a white woman victim of terrorism approaching Muslim communities across the country from the lofty high-ground of moral superiority. In political terms, what she is doing is throwing down the gauntlet - if 'I' can do it, so can you! - and in the same breath, she is also simplifying a tension which is infact intertwined with centuries of economic and Imperial dominance and everyday otherworldy brutality into some kind of personalistic love-fest. As though the the real tension is actually between different British communities, and not between Western foreign policy and a globally scapegoated minority.

I think you're wrong on many levels, but I also think that you and me talking about it, would be like a Chinese person and a Hungarian person, unable to speak one another's language, trying to discuss the merits of Proust.

My response has been set against the tone of editors congratulatory waffle throughout - not intended as a personal attack against Ms Hick's in any other capacity than that it makes ed look dim (not hard). The second quote you gave, however, was actually directed towards a comment by Bakunin where he suggested lots of disabled deserved medals for simply living through the day. If all you've got is one edgy quote which was set against ed's hyperbole more than a personal attack against Hicksy, then you're not doing well.

wrt the last two quotes - I readily admit that my position on her tactics has been formed near the end of this discussion as opposed to at the beginning, where I was focussing only on the mindless doling out of 'hero' medals to all those involved. Which is why I made a point of mentioning the fact that the last quote was on another 'more cynical level', which 'hadn't thus far been raised'.

Amongst other things, I think DU's problem is that hes trying to read this event entirely on a political level, which entirely misses the point. Trying to do good, and be positive is never going to be done in an innovative way never seen before, but theres actually a human element you need to acknowledge which unfortunately your sneering isnt helping you process.
