Men on 1970s pro-paedophile list could still work with children today

The age of consent is 16 in the UK.

You can't compare a schooldays romance with an adult and child situation and I think it's crass to do so. I admit there's a grey area but that's not what we're talking about. Those people weren't sixth formers wanting to shag their slightly younger crushes, they were grown men by quite some distance and knew what they were doing was wrong and were trying to gaslight others into enabling it. No one, including any judge, would view those two things as being in any way similar.

The thing in Dubai was in Dubai, where you have to be married to have sex and is therefore utterly unconnected. I don't know why it was mentioned.
Totally agree except for one bit. I'm pretty sure many of them had convinced themselves that what they were doing was not wrong.

Fair point. I should have said they knew it was illegal. Quite a big difference.
This was the crux of it in the 70s, though. They were seeking to team up with others whose sexual activity was also illegal, like eg 20-year-old gay men. The UK's sex laws of the time were iniquitous and discriminatory, meaning that 'it's illegal' wasn't necessarily a good guide to judging that 'it's wrong'. That's the situation they were attempting to exploit.

Well, quite - that was what my post was about. I don't understand why it was mentioned either, so I was trying to ascertain what the point of mentioning it was.

Was talking to someone earlier about the sex education in schools side of the discussion. Me not having kids and being in a naive bubble most of the time - I think in a perfect world kids shouldn't be exposed to anyhing to with sex until they're at least at secondary school? Even then ideally it should be very tactfully taught in the curriculum. I know it's vital and education is key, my friend does have young kids of primary age, I have a 3 1/2 year old and 1 year old nieces. They said a lot younger and of course from the point of teaching them as soon as they understand about what's wrong for adults to do and what things they need to tell someone if it's happened.

That's not the world we live in.
