Porridge and crumpets included on extensive list of foods banned from TV ads before 9pm

Why? It's trying to target high sugar shit foods, during rising rates of obesity and sickness. We can argue about which foods might fall foul of attempts such as this, (well everyone else can I CBA) but there's not much wrong with the principle. It isn't antitehtical to their other stated aim of trying to get more people back into work.

But that's the thing, isn't it? They're not actually concerned with improving our lives, they just want more productive workers. That's their "principle".

The 'porridge' they refer to is the microwave pots with added sugar, syrup and additives.
Ordinary porridge oats are ok for most people. Although they are carbs they are slow release, not turning into glucose quickly in your body.
But they can be bad for some diabetics. I'm Type 2 diabetic and porridge spiked my blood glucose higher than anything else.

Daily Fail group hacks can't read/understand or be thorough/honest shocker.

I just looked up the NPM score for the plain oats I have for breakfast: -5.

Looking at the ingredients of some 'Quaker Oat So Simple Apple & Blueberry Porridge Sachets Cereal', I compute a NPM score of -1. A competitor's microwaveable chocolate porridge also scores -1.

So none of those would be advertising restricted (NPM>=4 for food).

Though it would be far simpler just to ban all food advertising.

When I mentioned simply banning ads in the OP, I wasn't being facetious. It would be much simpler than this bureaucratic fucking-about.

Once Labour had a vision for what it wanted to do, what it wanted the country to be like.

Now, what is the vision? Freezing pensioners to death, euthanasia, partnership with BlackRock and banning adverts for porridge.

The real crime isn’t the ban on adverts. Who cares about adverts? It’s the poverty of ambition that has led to the idea even being tabled in the first place.

Once Labour built an NHS and lifted people out of poverty. It aimed, in a limited way, to install social democracy and reduce inequality. That Labour is dead.

It’s been replaced by a bunch of censorious lawyers, wanky policy wonks and middle class NGO types pretending to be the party of the organised working class.

ETA, if these clueless cunts want to get people to eat better how about focusing on delivering an economy that delivers a decent standard of living that allows people to buy decent food. Fucking advert bans…..

Yeah, I eat porridge every day with no sugar, just ground almonds stirred in. No way do is that gonna be on a credible "bad for you" list for the general public.

But as Serge says, all ads should be banned.

Oh no, no, no..!

There is a great deal of policy consultation going-on just now and you can be assured that it is only being done by the very best people!

The two I've had dealings with recently are an Oxford/Stanford graduate and ex-Harvard Faculty, whilst the DEFRA/food/diet bod was an Eton/Cambridge man, an actual contemporary and schoolfriend of Jacob Rees-Mogg!

He had some particularly interesting things to say. Apparently the current policies have been running for around twenty years and the Labour Government is of the opinion that working class have had long enough to have sorted themselves out. So, when the new raft of policies are implemented in four to five years, they feel that a much firmer "carrot and stick approach" would now be appropriate.

Interestingly, the more genuinely working class and recently reinstated government advisor from our staff and the head of a major agency sharing the table with him did not demur.!

Haven’t read the thread so apologies if discussed already. Are McDonald’s, Burger King or KFC included in this watershed ban?

Must be tough being a parent in the advert and social media age.
Food habits clearly start at a young age...
I'm surprised my niece's 10 year old is still skinny.. but he's hyperactive...
She posts evidence on FB
"Festive hot chocolate" apparently.

More sensible article - with added facts

No it's not - still going for clickbait title and the text is factually incorrect. For example it says:

Adverts for sugary breakfast cereals will also disappear from pre-watershed television screens, with granola, muesli and "porridge oats, including instant porridge and other hot oat-based cereals" all classed as "less healthy" food.

Oats and muesli are dessert for me and keep me above my target weight.
I'm amazed how much sugared cereal I could put away as a teenager and stay skinny.
In my world only broccoli could be advertised.

:weed:

Plain porridge oats are far far cheaper than any of the sugar-rich alternatives being offered.

Might be worth noting that some of the big oat-producing/using companies are currently amongst the biggest investors into research on new food sources, notably alternative protein/meat replacement from common plant-types like Broom and Nettle (one third protein apparently, compared to @10/12% from wheat/barley!). The animal feed giant Harbro is about the most active in the UK and clearly have eyes on the human market!
