Xi Jinping UK State visit

In an article titled 'China has awarded a peace prize to Robert Mugabe' they leave it to the 6th paragraph to point out that it's not (officially, nudge nudge) linked to the Chinese government.

Well, if we're going to go all out for Chinese investment there's no reason to be lily-livered about it. It's the strategy that's questionable, not the tactics.

On the contrary I feel the current lot are being completely lily-livered in acquiescing what are obviously demands from the Chinese to arrest anything that looks remotely like dissidence.

And next month Modi.
It is so transparent that Cameron is desperate to send a clear message to other EU leaders.

Would you care to elaborate? I think i might know what you mean but it is not so transparent to me.
I don't think it's coincidental that spectacles of UK relationships with extra-European economies are taking place at the same time that Cameron is supposedly re-negotiating EU terms in advance of the referendum.

If he really wanted to scare his EU counterparts, he'd invite Putin round for bowling and Nando's at the Witney Leisure Village.
He's not trying to scare them, though. He's attempting to impress realpolitik upon them and bolster his (weak) negotiating position.

Yeah I kind of read it as 'look we can do business with these people so just keep that in mind' - but only after your post. :)

I had never even heard of the offence of "conspiracy to commit threatening behaviour", so they hadn't even committed it, they were just suspected of conspiring to do so ..

You can get done for 'conspiracy to commit' just about anything these days. Sometimes judges will throw these sorts of charges out on the grounds that they're obviously bullshit, sometimes they'll happily convict you for conspiring to look at a copper funny.

Whether or not one can conspire by oneself is a question I leave to the semanticists.

I'd say no. Two or more. Otherwise its not a conspiracy its a plan. Known only to the individual

Someone wants to tell the bizzies that then.
Three people arrested in connection with the visit.

From the indie article i posted above

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the arrest of three demonstrators. The three were initially arrested to prevent a breach of the peace he said but were later rearrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit threatening behaviour.

Either way it's trumped up bullshit to create a pretext for breaking into houses and seizing computers and shit. Behaviour they are rarely called upon to justify. Do you really need a computer to plan to commit threatening behaviour? Do you even need a plan? A few pints and a bad day at the football is all most people seem to need.

Conspiracy charges can also be punished more severely than the actual thing you were conspiring to do, iyswim.

Yes it is obviously trumped-up bullshit and moreover what is worrying is them taking the computer(s) one has to wonder whether any information gleaned may end up being passed to Chinese security services.

And won't our EU 'partners' see it as just that, Cameron flogging every last vestige of the UKs dignity in order to prop up his laughable 'negotiating' position.
Take our coal/ shipbuilding/ steelworks, build the dodgiest/most expensive nuclear plant in history etc, but let's have a teensie weensie bit of your financial sector for my mates in the city.
And, finally, to seal the deal, if you want? I can do a good impression of a deid pigs Heid?

Xi Jingping has a new hat.
