What are you baking?

Hey aqua. I want to make this cake

View attachment 29955

but me and madamv are worried it will taste a bit rank with all the colouring in the sponges.

Didn't you make a rainbow/stripy cake and if so, could you taste the colouring?
i neeed someone to make me this cake! i'm forty next birthday. you get special things for being forty, right?

imagine if the little balls had a flavour too! different flavours!

they did, recipe is this one, but obviously you can substitute the puff pastry faffing for ready made (I would next time!)...

Thank you. I have bookmarked that.
Been meaning to make some for ages.
The Portuguese cafe round the corner from where we used to live (now closed :( ) sold them really cheap so I never made them but no where near here does so I'll have to get baking :)

Yorkshire Curd tarts and scones made using the whey from the milk

I have some red gel if you want to try it out with just red balls... Ooh comic relief cake!

Red food colouring is annoying. They have some good stuff in Hobbycraft but you need Christmas Red

Sorry, only just seen this. I have bought 6 gels. They were expensive but she said I'll get 30 odd cakes out of them so everything I make is going to be multi coloured. I'm also going to use it to dye royal icing for the spots on the outside too so who knows.

Good call BoatieBird  ....you know what, I have been meaning to start replenishing the CAKE DRAWER in the freezer :D cos other than 3 white choc and banana flapjacks, we're completely out :( and I've not made these for ages (and as you know, I LOVE them, too! :D ) so my daughter and I are going to make a batch too!

I did panic slightly cos I've not got any plain yoghurt..'awwwww :( '.....but, just by chance, I DO have some full fat *drum roll* lemon curd yoghurt   :D so I'm thinking that wouldn't hurt! :hmm:

I remember this recipe but never got round to making any - can you link me up to the recipe pleeeeeease. or send me cake :hmm:

Nom... do you think they would work without the yog sheo? Someone said they used extra milk instead?

That sounds awesome

I'm not totally sure, but I think the yoghurt produces some kind of reaction which makes them lighter :hmm::confused:

Yeah...that person was also complaining about them being stodgy etc :D so I'd go for the yoghurt, tbh...as it turned out, I didn't have ground almonds   so I've made a nectarine crumble cake instead...but just cut into it and it's not cooked in the middle...omg  so back in the oven it goes! :D

For good reason. : D It works or it will on second go but it is fiddly.

It's a faff dyeing all the cake batter different colours. I put the balls round the edge of the tin, forgetting that I wanted polka dot through the whole cake. *facepalm*

The colours were good but I didn't like the Madeira recipe the instructions gave for the balls. They held their shape well but didn't taste of much and were a funny texture.

So, a bit shit but a first attempt and I know where I went wrong.

Not got any pics because Mr s was hassling me to cut it and the icing looked shit but I'll get one with the balls inside.

Just put a banana and choc chip loaf in the oven....it may be worthy of a photo or it may be a disaster, seem to remember it tasted bitter before, hoping i did something wrong and didnt do that bit today?
