What are you baking?

I started making choc chip cookies from an all-in-one recipe in an old notebook. Started weighing out ingredients and adding them to the bowl and then got to the part on the list about 3 eggs. Suddenly thought "what biscuit recipe has 3 eggs in it?", looked again and realised I was looking at the wrong page and was actually making a sponge cake.

So I made choc chip fairy cakes instead.

Then I didn't go to the picnic they were for, and they ended up at my mother's, who will not eat them, so I suspect they are destined for the bin, which is a shame because they were actually quite nice.

I can send you my address ruby :D

today I baked a ham & blue cheese tart, sausage rolls, chocolate malteser cake (but then got drunk before I did the buttercream so that'll have to wait until tomorrow) and some bread :) my house smells lush :D

Littlun has a mate over for the day so we've just made chocolate brownies. Will now try and tempt them away from the tv to plant a herb garden.

Today's *spur-of-the-moment* taleggio and dried Basil bread is looking like a grade-A catastrophe :D

My office smells of sour, herby vomit :(

Trying a black olive and sundried tomato loaf for the first time in a year or two.

On the bright side, even in the worst of imaginable universes, it can't turn out as bad as yesterday's cheese loaf.

When Artichoke got home (after salsa dancing, at 11.30, a good many hours after it'd been baked), she asked if someone'd been sick :D

I am so glad this thread took off.

Today I have added flour, sugar and milk to Herman the German cake.

When I got my portion home last night, quite a lot had leaked out of the tub and today there were no yeasty bubbles like there are suppose to be.

I am concerned Herman is unwell... :(

cheese bread does tend to smell rather vomitous while baking. doesn't necessarily taste like that though.

I just made a carrot cake for my Dad, as it's his favourite cake that I bake.
Well, I say cake, it turned into carrot buns, because I fancied a change. The advantage to this is that you get a higher icing:cake ratio, I've decided. And the icing is really nice. None of your cream cheese traditional stuff for me or my Dad. Icing sugar, grated crystallised ginger, lime zest and lime juice. It goes really well with the flavours in the carrot cake. Though it does rather look like the cat's been sick on the top of your cakes.
Just as well I've not got a cat, I suppose. :D

In the oven is Delia's Marmalade cake. I have loads of spices, but no ground spice, so I impressed myself by putting a few cloves, bits of cinnamon etc in the pepper mill and making the freshest, most authentic mix outside Bombay.

Sadly, before eating it has to be wrapped in foil for a few days or it crumbles badly, says Delia, and I'm not arguing with HER. Did you see her, pissed and jeering Norwich FC players? Worse than Middlesbrough gals.

I neglected mine for a few days and it survived. No bubbles doesn't sound good though. Hopefully he's picked up now you've fed him :)

I've been keeping the starter culture going for a few weeks and have made a few herman's, with slightly different ingredients everytime. The last one I made the day before yesterday I made with mixed fruit, apple and almonds. I think I may try adding rhubarb & strawberries to the next one with ground ginger rather than mixed spice

oh dear, how is he now? DId you try putting him somewhere warm? :)

Rainbow cake tomorrow

For the first time since christmas, I'm baking.

Nothing adventurous, just a coffee and walnut cake but I really fancied it.

I was going to make a Victoria sponge too but it seems silly having 2 cakes on the go for 2 of us.

I tried to bake a loaf yesterday, using the juice out of a jar of Peppadews instead of a large proportion of the water.

I guess the vinegar kinda inhibited the yeast, because I ended up with a stunningly delicious cannonball. It was made in the breadmaker; but ended up huddled in a corner :D IT had, clearly, risen a bit. But not enough to really be called a conventional loaf.

Delicious, though. I took it on a prospective night shift last night, with rocket, peppadews, bacon and piri piri turkey. And it was, probably, just about the nicest sandwich (or two) I've ever had.

Trying sweetened vinegar Peppadew bread mk 2.

With double yeast.

The last effort actually *did* make the nicest sandwich I think I've ever had.

Made nicest carrot cake I've ever made on Saturday, so much so that I'm making another one on Thursday :D

Tomorrow I think I may bake a cinnamon and sultana loaf.

found a huge mulberry tree in a park with the kids yesterday so we picked almost enough for a whole pie. The kids were covered in purple stains (ok I was too a little)
Picked up some frozen ( ) raspberries and made a mulberry/raspberry pie :)

Tomorrow is lemon baking day - I will be attempting a tarte citron and a lemon drizzle cake as they are both things I can only have if I make them from scratch due to my allergies.

Chewy oat, seed and apricot bars. It's only the second time I've made them, and they're a really forgiving recipe and lush too.
