Might get lucky if you ask nicely. To make vegan cheese surely you need to milk a vegan.
Although I prefer the taste of oat milk to dairy milk by miles, vegan cheese has a long way to go until it can match the mighty cheddar. The vegan Applewood cheddar stuff is OK in something like a salad sandwich but I've yet to find anything that can live up to the expectations of, say, cheese on toast. I've had some vegan chese pizzas (in the US) that were bloody lovely though.Ok.
I need names brands etc.
Looking for the CLOSEST to cheddar tasting sliced cheese.
Hit me!!!
All you vegans!!
I see Philadelphia have a ‘plant based’ version out now which I’m quite intrigued to buy. I think I’m more in favour of soft ‘cheese’ than any attempt at hard cheese.

You can get vegan cream cheese that is pretty much identical to the cruelty-riven stuff so maybe science will eventually crack vegan cheese, hopefully soon.
I’ve discovered you can’t use vegan cheese in all the ways you use dairy cheese.
Yes, plant based Philadelphia is pretty good. You can get vegan cream cheese that is pretty much identical to the cruelty-riven stuff so maybe science will eventually crack vegan cheese, hopefully soon
Fairly new on the market (or to me at least - I do live under a rock but am occasionally forced to face society) is cathedral city cheddar.
This is very similar to actual cheddar and reasonably priced compared to the 'artisan' offerings found in specialist shops!
I even attempted cheese on toast and it wasn't nearly as plastic tasting as most others, although it did have that edge to it. Still, so far as vegan cheddar goes this one I will recommend.
This is very similar to actual cheddar…
That is disappointing but thanks for the heads up!
Not cheese, but a pea protein egg substitute I fell for. Called Cracked. It’s vile. Avoid.
It promised me scrambled feggs (putting an f for fake in front of a word is a thing, right?). It delivered something the consistency of polenta, which is fine, not judging, but with a weird and unpleasant flavour. I’d wanted a nice Sunday breakfast.
I’ll stick to tofu scramble, when I can be bothered, but generally I’ll just have porridge.
Nutritional yeast flakes mixed with bread crumbs for toppings on bakes or on its own in lasagne is cheesyish.
