Uruguay vs England (Group D) Thursday 19th June 2014

anyroad, better do some work and let yous nurse them sore heads and wipe away the tears!

football = self esteem? do you get that from losing then? :D

Wherever I've taught, nobody has ever had any idea where Wales is. If I show them a map of the British Isles and ask them to name the countries, they say "Ireland, Scotland and England".

When I say "And Wales!" they usually reply "¿Qué?"

A place so shit people don't even know it exists. Why can't you be interesting Celts like the Irish and the Scottish?

He should definitely stay. There's nothing to be gained by changing manager before the Euros. Did he make grave tactical errors that caused the defeats. I don't think so. Rooney shouldn't have played on the wing in the first game but options are limited. England as has been noted, just aren't that good a team. This is pretty much our level ATM.
The whole Rooney thing - the fact that there was no overall consensus suggests it was a tricky situation without an obvious answer - Hodgson had to make one decision over another, and I don't think we can easily say it was the wrong or right one.

:D hahahhahaha, so what
can you see the wood yet?

i know i'm being childish on this thread and enjoying it too much but look at some of your own posts for fucks sake :D

To be honest, of the 3 things that need to happen for England to qualify, 2 are entirely possible. Italy still haven't qualified and so need to beat Costa Rica (can't work the maths out, but a draw may not be enough :hmm:). England, deep breath, should beat Costa Rica. Problem comes when an already qualified Italy come up against a Uruguay who still need something from the final game. Same time, if by some fluke England did qualify, everything said about their uninspiring football and poor collective performance would still be true. They were good enough to have qualified second in a group that had only one good team in it, but the draw for this world cup meant they were never that likely to get through. England are a mid ranking team who played to just about the level of their ability.

Maybe we're just shooting the shit back at you. Do you think you're some kind of evil genius who's got us all rattled up? I'm not that bothered about England personally.

Looks like ccraig's gone to do some errr .... work ...

What's frustrating me is, despite the large majority of people saying we'll be lucky to get out of the group before the tournament, they are still looking for someone to blame! Just accept that we're not good enough at the moment, and then work on that - it's not blaming anyone, it's just the situation we find ourselves in!

And I still don't think we were that bad - we weren't embarrassed or outclassed, we just got beat by two teams who have a little extra.
Good post. Roy might have made the odd change to his squad (Carrick for me, but them I'm a one eyed MU fan), a couple of players should have played better (Gerrard most of all), but ultimately they reached the level of their ability. Played nearer to their full potential than 2010 - by a long way).

no course not, just upped the abuse and xenophobia to shoot the shit back, not bothered....

Yep, everyone's an expert. I'm still gonna enjoy this world cup and avoid much of the postmortim phone in stuff.

It would be fucking hilarious if we did qualify. All this post-mortem and then somehow we have to reanimate the cadaver and convince ourselves that yes, it is coming home :D The media won't know which way to pull! :D

I had to tell one of my own coaches to go away after he started bawling at my team during a recent match. He constantly lambasted one of my players and as a result smashed this boys confidence in the match, the boy told me he was scared. This typifies what goes on up and down the UK. I witness this every week.
my eighteen year old cousin plays professionally in Poland, or at least he did up until last year when he finally quit having gone right through the youth system as he just couldnt take the shouting and politics. what he describes there is much more like an army training method of breaking down the players to make them obedient and he just wasnt cut out for it. Shouty parents there too.

im sure the rest of your post is true...good luck with your coaching BB, sounds like you're doing good work. Its a shame, in this day and age sport is a way to get kids out and beyond their circumstances, and its sad to hear its got such a lot of negativity around it.

Gerrard is not a failure. Coming second is not failing.
it is in a football match :p

Be like some army field hospital - 'this one's not dead sarge!'

Not unexpected but it's the hope that fucks you up every time. After Rooney's equaliser, there was a brief period... Then back to reality.
true, and in fact it was an exact repeat of the Italy game in that respect, the same rollercoaster. When the first Italian goal went in I wasnt that fussed, it was only when we equalised that I started to get my hopes up

Thats true. Apart from the bit where we dont get to blame Gerrard

This is what's really getting to me, even though I knew it would be a hard group, and said I'd be happy if we just put in some more promising performances than previous tournaments... still I'm gutted!

It's not just an England thing, I always think that in sport crazy things are able to happen. We've all seen them, we know it can happen, and so maybe it might happen this time...

And still I'm thinking "y'know what, we're not out..."  :D

I don't follow England friendlies and qualifiers, I hate the sight of the St. George's cross knight fancy dress, England fans abroad are an embarrassment, Idon't like the national anthem and find it difficult to cheer on United players, AND I I'd swap my UK passport for another one.....

but..

it's that thing about hope kicking in isn't it? I didn't mind the first goals going in in the Italy and Uruguay games either, I felt like a neutral. It's the equalisers that get to you. Childhood memories of supporting England come back and you're there again.

I do think Hodgson is a bad manager. The players are pretty good but just a notch below what's needed and I'm out of my depth when it comes to talking about junior level coaching. I have heard a lot of people saying just how joyless and competitive it seems to be for kids now though. Given England's population you'd think just by chance "we" 'd perform better in these tournaments. We're basically defying maths! In the coming decades other countries will grow in stature and ability. Imagine how grim it will be to see The USA lift the cup one day! We might be wasting our best chances to perform well in it before the world changes forever. I suppose England are lucky to have ever won it all. 7 countries out of 220 have won the world cup to date? You have to take what you can get I suppose.

Going back to the thing about the nippers, football should at the very least be fun for kids to play. If everyone's lost sight of that, it's miserable in the extreme.
