5...so far.
I'd actually be more confident of him scoring if he didn't start, and came off the bench instead. He'd make an excellent impact sub in the middle atm.If Rooney starts, I am putting money on him to score
It's like arguing Michael Owen should play cos he was great at France '98. At least the argument based on his record on the qualifiers was on reasonably solid ground. How many in the last 9 years? Oh, one.
what's nine years between friends? How many in the last 9 years? Oh, one.

Tbf that would go for the rest of the team too... (except there's a bundle of players who've kicked on massively in the last 6 months)Yeah, except we didn't have a tough group. You only play the team you get, but there's a reason we played Brazil twice. We'd not had a decent challenge in ages
van persie does it better
...and his two assists.Just noted that aside from his two against Brazil in friendlies...
I think that's what will happen against Uruguay anyway, I don't think it'll do any harm, but I won't expect Rooney to magically come to life.If it goes in off Rooney's (or any England player's) arse we'll still be celebrating, Van Persie can have his kodak moment
I thought Rooney had a decent game against Italy tbh, he set up the goal with a great cross that not every player could have done (which is one of the sillier claims I've seen on this thread and in the media), and was a whisker away from scoring himself after a sharp move. I think all the players will be better next game after getting this one out of the way.
RE: Moving Rooney....Sterling will be just as effective on the left, so we'll lose nothing and almost certainly improve the team shape.
Left back (in the changing rooms)Wilshere back at the hotel.

Friendlies, Joseph, friendlies.
Crouch got criticised for scoring a hatful of his against 'lesser opposition' and even he managed a World Cup goal.
Ditto Anderton, Upson and King Heskey.
How do you think he's playing right now, Joe? Not over his entire England career, but right now.Well, that was my original point. To repeat, not only has Rooney already scored more competitive goals for England already - the value/ratio in scoring away from home is significant as well.

2 and a bit weeks most of emExcept, y'know, for the four week away trips
crouch scored lots of soft goals in insignificant gamesThough that does put Peter Crouch above Shearer and Charlton

I agree.
I'm not as down on Rooney as everyone else, I think he's a talented player who can both do a job for the team as well as creating a moment of magic. He's not a superstar, but I think people's negative reactions to him are more down to the media overplaying his talent, while playing down his willingness to do a job for the team. I actually think he's a much better team player than most so called superstars, He'll genuinely play almost anywhere that he's asked, but it so happens that he's not as effective in some of those positions. That's not his fault, or even a reason to dislike him. Ronaldo and Messi are freaks. Van Persie's a different type of player, but you don't really see him playing effectively all over the pitch, do you?
he'll go over but he'll be left behind in yakutsk or chita or somesuchI do have a perhaps misplaced optimism that Rooney will come good at this World Cup, but if he doesn't - I can't see him making the team for Russia in 2016
