Urban75 Album of the Year 2014 - The Results

Re the original top 20 list from belboid further back ...

Great list as usual, loads to explore.

This :)

Came late to the thread, but fascinating stuff -- I doubt I'll actually get round to exploring more than two or three properly ( ), but I'd like to sample a track or two (at least) off more ...

Did you write all the 2-3 line commentaries yourself belboid? Impressed if so ....

(Thinking of prioritising Sleaford Mods, Gruff Rhys-Jones and the Adams Family one ;) )

15 Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata

The Indianna rapper and the Californian hip-hopper come together to create a modern classic that recalls the dark-alley vibes of Raekwon's classic, RZA-produced 1994 debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

One of the only ones so far that I think needs a proper listen on headphones n shit.

14 Caribou - Our Love

How could he possibly follow up Andorra and (2010 UAotY winner) Swim? By doing pretty much more of the same with added hints of R&B and hip hop. Not as immediately magnificent as its predecessors, it’s a grower not a shower.

Yeah Dan, that's you. Nice one. Do someone else next though. :)

Great list, as always, not heard anyone mention Gazelle Twin - Unflesh or Lydia Ainsworth - Right from Real. Those were a couple of my favourites this year.

gazelle twin got a vote from me. i only discovered it at the last minute and was blown away.

7 Swans - To Be Kind

Unlucky 13? Not for Swans, whose latest was developed whilst touring over the previous two years. Easily as good as the brilliant The Seer from two years ago (another UAotY winner), it’s an album that screams ‘lock up your daughters’ – because otherwise they’ll come barging in shouting ‘take this shit off’

This is incredible. I need to listen to more Swans.

I've given Mogwai a fair go over the years. Don't get the adulation. I find them mindbogglingly tedious.

Mogwai are past their best for me. I don't want to hear Stuart thingy singing.

I was rubbish and never voted but that's because I find it too hard to put things in favourite order, although I can say that Swans are probably the best live band in the world ever.

Always love this time of year listening to the list so everyone elses efforts are very much appreciated :) Had the Sun Kil Moon album on tonight and got PERC on now.

13 Richard Dawson - Nothing Important

It’s the anti-folk album of the year. Sometimes it sounds like Les Dawson’s piano playing, sometimes it sounds like Captain Beefheart. Occasionally it even sounds like music. Quite brilliant, if that’s your sort of thing.

Excellent tutting.

I've been enjoying the Malcolm Middleton / David Shrigley album that came out at the start of December. Some great (and hilarious :D) lyrics from the boy Shrigley, well complemented by Malcy's instrumentals.

Would like to mention Kelis. The very best album of the year? Well, a bit of a push, but deserves some affection at least.

4 The Delines – Colfax

Richmond Fontaine's Willy Vlautin is back with a new band, a female singer and a rich collection of songs. It’s absolutely wonderful, and if it wasn’t for the awful Sandman’s Coming, this would be album of the year.

This is amazing. I didn't hear it until it appeared on this thread. Love this thread.

This thread was worth logging back in for alone. Cheers, I now have loads of new music for the New Year :)

Same here! I spent much of the year rediscovering the albums I already have (vinyl) as I finally got a record player and my records out of storage. I will get around to listening to some of these..erm...soon

Wow! What an amazing thread and sooo much new music for me to explore :)

One of my favourite albums of the year is "The Inevitable End" by Röyksopp, it's just amazing on so many levels.
