Urban75 Album of the Year 2014 - The Results

I'm hoping my no. 1 choice Angel Olsen tops the list. What about a lana Del Rey forum upset?! Could happen.

5 Mogwai - Rave Tapes

The reviews were a tad underwhelming, but Urban stills loves the Scottish post-rockers. As they say themselves: The album has ten songs and features drums (both real and electronic), guitars, synthesizers, piano and singing (both vocodered and human). We hope you like it!" – Don’t worry, we do.

4 The Delines – Colfax

Richmond Fontaine's Willy Vlautin is back with a new band, a female singer and a rich collection of songs. It’s absolutely wonderful, and if it wasn’t for the awful Sandman’s Coming, this would be album of the year.

3 Angel Olsen - Burn Your Fire For No Witness

The Missouri-born songstress has a voice that belongs in the Kit Kat Club and a tender guitar-playing that comes over like the bastard daughter of Bill Callahan and T Rex. How could you not love an album that kicks off with a track called Unfucktheworld?

2 Sleaford Mods - Divide and Exit

It had to be, didn’t it? Widely expected to be Number 1 (including by yours truly), it came damn close. No half-measures, no CD-long arcs, no organic development undertaken, no time at all to let it sink in and decide if this is something you might like. It’s the fucking Mods, and if you don’t like it, well, you have no soul. Or taste. Or something.

Oh, and the youtube track should help you understand the so-called mistake in my OP.

1. The Bug - Angels and Devils

Well, that surprised you [unless you're killerb], didn’t it? Kevin Martin has made Urban’s first grime Number 1. Martin splits his interests, giving us six songs of muddy dirges and six tracks of raucous, MC-aided banging choons that should be familiar to fans of London Zoo. Presenting oneself as two competing forces is the dialectic in musical form, and Angels & Devils slides comfortably between those poles.

Blimey. I remember London Zoo did well too, so makes sense really I guess. Great stuff Belboid thank you. Will you post 50-30?

As always, only one thing I voted for made the list, but then I didn't seem to listen to much new music this year. Probably spent most of the year listening to the Shugo Tokumaru album that came out a few years back, which I only discovered this year.

I also voted for:

Withered Hand, New Gods
Comet Gain, Paperback Ghosts
Sharon Jones, Give The People What They Want
Allo Darlin', We Come From The Same Place
Alvvays, Alvvays
The Understudies, Let Desire Guide Your Hand

...and I need to check out the Ex Hex album, which I think I'll like...

This is consistently the best thread of Urbs and I look forward to it every year. Its a brilliant reminder of how diverse we are but that we are still part of a community that can share. The way its put together and written is fantastic. I always listen to everything and I've only got as far as Todd Terje and already have 4 albums that I want to buy.

Many thanks for putting this together this year belboid!

((((Urbs!!))))
