Urban75 Album of the Year 2002

Putting other people's records on is the same thing as writing and recording original music now I see.

Alexa, play Abbey Road.

There you go look, I'm Paul McFuckingCartney.

Regardless of what the internet says, I was living in Portugal in 2001, Fado em Mi came out in 2002 to rub my face in the fact I wasn't living there any more...
Then again, the version I had was the 2CD version which included some great live tracks iirc. Which did come out in 2002.

Add the Doves one to the list of stuff I didn't vote for because I forgot about it.
just pushed out of mine. 22nd, I'd say. I do believe that would be worth something in Knotted's scoring system, I wanted to stop at 20 cos I just knew there were far better albums out there that didn't deserve to lose out to a 'another one I heard from that year.'

I may be taking this too seriously, but you gotta have values to live by, goddammit

What tipped me into acceptance was 1) listening to them and realising how much the mix can change the character of the music. 2) considering things like The Residents Third Reich and Roll which I'm very likely to vote for when the time comes. These dj mixes feel like they're the natural successors to The Residents circa 1976.

It would have nudged it up three places, but then your 21st might have nudged in front of it or something. It's all tightly packed.

Probably finish this tomorrow. I've got a Good Friday plan.

=37 - Montain Goats - Tallahassee

Lyrical americana/folk rock/driving punky rock. I get the feeling there was a lot hope this one would do well. I'm so sorry. I will say that this is one of the few rock albums from this year that doesn't sound like it's from 2002. Dated very well.
Well, clearly there wasn't that much hope if none of you bloody philistines voted for it. Although it might well be that you're all boombox-era purists and so everyone else chose All Hail West Texas as their #1 instead?

Keep your hopes up! The more work you put into your hopes the greater that delicious bitterness when they're dashed.

I'm starting to worry that SpookyFrank's old man yelling has scared Knotted off, so now we'll never get to find out whether it's All Hail West Texas or Beat Surf Fun at #1.

17 - RJD2 - Deadringer

Instrumental trip hop I guess. Chill, beautiful and edgeless, some ace builds ups as well. You moody lot were smoking a lot of something 21 years ago. Is that an Amon Düül II sample I hear?

14 - Songs:Ohia - Didn't It Rain

And the U75 Bumble Grove Farm collective strike back with Songs:Ohia!! Singer-songwriter/country rock. I'm not even being ironic when I say this is as hip as it gets. Beautiful modern sound without losing all the necessary dirt. This could be released today and fit in perfectly. I don't have to explain this one to the kids.

12 - Jazzanova - In Between

Now we're talking. Not only is jazz not dead it's not even smelling funny. Hip hop, post rock and easy listening sounds in the mix. One groovy trip. Deserves some love if you missed it. Go listen!

11 - Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

The first song sounds Cat Stevens Father and Son if you can imagine Cat Stevens being unable to write a decent tune. The rest sounds like Coldplay if you can imagine saint Chris not being able to write a decent tune.

Good production values and quite spacey though, you can definitely chill to it and it's got a great cover. Sorry but I'm struggling here. How is this a thing?

10 - Sonic Youth - Murray Street

Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style is worth my time. The rest is jangle rock boredom and it's such a shame because their 1999 album was really good actually. A band that consistently do their own thing rather than what I want them to do. How annoying is that?

I bought that from the charity shop for a pound as I'd heard it was some kind of psych pop masterpiece. It sounded like a shit 80s Pink Floyd album. I gave it back to the charity shop the next day.
