Urban75 Album of the Year 1994

Bark Pyschosis- Hex . From playing Napalm Death covers to an album which could be a second cousin once removed to Talk Talks Spirit of Eden with elements of Pink Floyd, you could say that Bark Psychosis were the original post rock band .

It's beautiful, engaging and yet in parts provoking and its pristinely produced. Its an album to explore. They split whilst recording and mixing this so there was no band left to promote it. Sutton the only surviving member released a second Bark Psychosis album some ten years later .

Even long past their peak Dinosaur Jr. could still pull off tracks like this. Utterly joyous guitar.

That's actually their best selling single ever and there's a couple of decent songs on the album. Essentially a J. Mascis solo effort though, he reckons Mike Johnson played bass on it but he did drums, guitar and vocals. Very depressing album.

Enjoyed Aus Rotten up thread? Or maybe you just fancy some Polish "queercrust". Well you're in luck. A year before* their best album Homomilitia stuck out a split with Forca Macabre.

*I've seen this split claimed as released in 1993, 1994 and 1995 and I sure as hell can't remember!

I went to a Megadog in Bradford in 94. Took a microdot and danced and danced, having a great night. It was advertised as ending a 6am, when i should've come down enough to figure out getting back to Leeds, but for some reason at 2am the music was turned off and we all got kicked out. Jesus, I was fucked. So off we staggered into Bradford tripping our tits off. I was rolling on the floor laughing when some late night townies came by. At first they weren't sure of us, but I won them over by talking crazy acid riddled bollocks. I think they were amused by the freak they'd found. Suddenly they said I'd better go - some tough cunt was coming. Next thing I knew some geezer had taken a swing at me and I was in the road being called a fucking poof.

That's not great when your mind is fried on acid.

We ran for it, found a taxi and got back to my mates flat, me spinning out somewhat. To calm me down my mate put on FSOL's Lifeforms, but all the wibbling put me on edge and all I could do was sit there writing I love my girlfriend over and over on sheet after sheet of loo roll with a blue biro. So instead we tried something different and put on Jah Wobble and the Invaders Of The Heart's Take Me to God. Somehow that was the magic album whose mix of world music, alt-rock, dub and dance beats with a queue of guest vocalists and Wobble's ramblings soothed my shattered psych back together. Even Dolores O'Riordan's warbling landed in the perfect place.

Ever since that night Jah Wobble's album has had a special place in my heart and I rate it out of all proportion to how good it probably is. And I've never been able to listen to Lifeforms again.

I was having a bit of a 1994 session while cooking this evening and this was particularly satisfying.

Three whole albums from Beck before we all found out he wasn't really weird, he's just a scientologist. I've only included the one with proper songs on it though I loved all the sped up tape recorder stuff at the time.

"One good minute could last me a whole year".

It had to in '94 as my mental health went AWOL.

Another cracking album from Superchunk.

Blaggers ITA - ‘Bad Karma’

A poppier album made during their short-lived adventure with a major label - it's no ‘United Colors’ but I was excited for it coming out, there's a lot of energy, zesty production, and I have good memories of playing it for the first time

This year is going to be so hard.

So many great albums released have been mentioned already, but The Downward Spiral is and will and will always be my favourite album of all time.

I guess I'm looking at another lonely "You were the only person to vote for this" moment. :)

Chumbawamba - ‘Showbusiness!’

A good representation of their live shows and I loved Chumbawamba and nothing you can say can change that

Consolidated - ‘Business Of Punishment’

Another case of not my favourite album by this band but... ‘Play More Music’ is more my jam, but this is still very good and listening to it now reminds me of the first time, when someone else working on the shitty hop farm that summer made me a copy - cheers Stuart!

Dub War - ‘Pain’

Would have picked the preceding mini-album ‘Words Of Warning’ but can't find it in full online, so this will do - they played a powerful set at the Deptford Urban Free Festival that summer
