Urban75 Album of the Year 1992

I'm genuinely not sure if I've ever heard of Sugar as a band outside of this thread. Were they any good, then?
Bob Mould's band after Husker Du. With the drummer from Human Sexual Response.

Two fucking great albums (the one I forgot and next years Beaster) and then a couple more.

Can't believe no one one voted for Prince or Suzanne Vega. They were seminal albums.

Also can't believe I missed that Ween had my fave album with of the year out, so what do I know 😳

My RATM review....theyre great of course, would be a show to see live, only thing is, not necessarily a criticism, but the guitar sound across the LP is not as distorted as I was expecting - quite a smooth sound all in all. Still bangs of course, especially lyrics, I guess I was just expecting a bit rawer a sound

fuck you i wont queue were you tell me

i knew a few RATM songs just never heard the album properly...;)

Strong PE Nation of Millions influence I think

The guitar is more notable for guitarists saying "how the fuck did he get that sound out of it?" than it's heaviness or distortion.

Thanks for the Adriana Calcanhotto recommendation. I recognise some of the songs but hadn't listened to the album before.

It's a great album that will appeal to most posters I think. Just outside of the tbf natural anglophone biases of U75.

Am I allowed to ask who else voted for Gorecki?

Music sounds very Pixie-ish to me, not the vocals though

And no way is UFOrb better than SAW.
For me both stone cold masterpieces of electronic music in album form, which is rare, most albums fail in consistency.
Aphex nudges ahead for me for the sound inventiveness but UFOrb is a high point for them, and for all "ambient music"... i dont even think of it as ambient that much, its very dubby this record, Jah Wobble plays on it, its ambient dub techno for the most part really.
And it sold really well at the time (got to #1 IIRC), and that's to its credit, managed to be deep, uplifting, transcendental, all of that stuff, and not totally up its arse - its genuinely fun - and had popular appeal. Hard to think of many albums that manage both, serious and fun at the same time.

1992 was quite possibly peak drug use in UK history, almost certainly peak ecstasy use, IIRC about 2 million Es dropped on an average weekend. Not to mention all the acid, and the rest. 92 was when it went from an In The Know culture to a Your Local Sports Centre culture. It slowly went downhill from there, and ever more cokey as the 90s went on, and to this day in fact.

So yeah for me two UK albums that define the highpoint of the highest the UK has ever been - embodied in album form at least.
