Urban75 Album of the Year - 1977

I disagree, an album is often a body of work that has been carefully thought out, order and flow, ups and downs etc. I think it's a shame people are not locked into that nowadays.
A good example for me is how much I hated 'come on Eileen', but when heard in the context of the album it works just fine, great even.
There are some albums that work just as you say and when they work they work. However many were rushed out to suit the record labels timetable and contractual obligations and for some artists its clear that they just havent got the songs/tracks/talent to do it.Others are just the hits and a few b sides. The worst ones are when they throw in a different style or a jokey track.
There are some albums in 1977 that meet what you say ie Low,possibly Heroes, Rumours, Before and After Science, Foreign Affairs. Might start a thread on albums that work as albums that you listen all the way through.

These are what we call "good albums", and will be the ones we choose between when voting here.

These are what we call "bad albums" and will not feature highly in lists of "good albums".

Not sure what the issue is here...

Actually all the Fela albums are a bit of a cheat as they only have two tracks on each. Combined Fela output for 77 makes one album really. I think a vote for any Fela records should combine into one slot really. :hmm:
They may only have two tracks, but they're looong tracks. Sorrow, Tears & Blood (the 2 track album) is only a minute shorter than Damned Damned Damned (12 tracks).

You worried about vote splitting?

i think youve got to pick personal favourites that you genuinely listened to and really rate.
Totally agree. That should be the whole point of these polls. Nothing is more boring than looking at the usual lists of critically acclaimed classic albums.
Especially with albums, many have some tunes i like on but are filled with plenty more tunes i could leave...
That's why no US disco albums made my list. They tend to be one killer classic, which was released as a single, a couple of good tracks and a load of filler. Teddy Pendergrass being the worst culprit in '77.

Throbbing Gristle - 2nd Annual Report
Suicide - Suicide
The Residents - Fingerprince
and
Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express

I was thinking the same thing for those two. If 'recorded in 1977 but released later' is allowed then Les Rallizes Denudes double live walloper from March 77 can also ease its way to somewhere near the front of the queue. Also Chrome's Alien Soundtracks.
Great album, but no. It has to have been released, otherwise we should really be excluding albums recorded in '76 but only released in 77.

Just listening to Peter Hammill's Over - it's not the Hammill I'd usually go to, but, fucking hell, it's good.

Its hard to pare down to 10 as 1977 was a good year for music it seems. coulda had 15 or even 20 choices, in the end just the '77 records that we've played in the last few months.

This is difficult. But is making me focus.
Anyone remember Pink Flag by Wire?

Admittedly I bought all of these albums a few years or decades after they came out. I was probably listening to Bay City Rollers, Abba and Brotherhood of Man etc. in 77.

Yeah, but it's not "Which albums did you buy in 1977?", or people born after couldn't join in. To be fair I did check if the Amazing Darts came out that year or the next, because although I liked the Ramones, I liked Darts as well.

(Actually I'd probably still put the Amazing Darts in my top ten for 78).
