Ukraine: Unsubstantiated rumours and speculation

Rumours that another river crossing attempt was made by Russia today on the Donetz river, with similar results to the previous effort. Apparently a whole battalion tactical group (BTG) destroyed again. Suspect that could be an exaggeration, but looking forward to the pictures.

It's doing the rounds that Russia's Counsellor (wouldn't they have more than one?) to the United Nations in Geneva has resigned but no confirmation. The English version of his letter is undated and unsigned so it could be a load of nonsense,

You'd think if he was anyone important, googling his name would bring something up but nothing.

what, again ? that'd be like the third time if true

Read a story in the Chinese press that one of Russia's new-fangled self-propelled heavy mortars has been destroyed in Lugansk, located by Ukrainian forces because some well-known Russian journo did a report with video of it firing from the same location yesterday.

Thread on apparent refusal by soldiers in two separate DNR regiments to fight in LNR:
Sending all the adult males from the occupied Donbas into the meat grinder does seem a bit counterproductive. if there ever is a referendum on nationhood in that area (which would fairly include expats forced out after 2014) then slaughtering all the remaining culturally Russian population won’t help. Not that there will ever be a fair referendum so academic really.

Also who exactly is Russia fighting to liberate, it seems a strange liberation where you get forcibly conscripted and sent untrained to the front line with a sixty-year-old rifle and a handful of bullets. Maybe it’s not about people after all.

Royal Navy could escort grain ships through Odesa blockade

The official said that the operation would be risky because of mines and the blockade. He said that although the Russian maritime forces were far from the coast they were controlling the area with precision missiles.

Turkey would have to provide a guarantee that the ships could pass through safely. After the invasion of Ukraine Ankara invoked international law and closed the Bosphorus and Dardanelles to all warships.

Ukraine has millions of tons of grain in its silos and in five to six weeks, new grain will be harvested but there will be no storage space. Its inability to export its stocks has pushed up world food prices and led to warnings of famine.

Yulia Svyrydenko, one of Ukraine’s deputy prime ministers, told the BBC that the world should help to lift the blockade of sea ports, hinting that military means might be necessary. “We need a guarantee from partners — of course it’s a defence guarantee, a security guarantee — to be able to export [using] these vessels. And to make it, not once but on a regular basis.”
UK government has 'no plans' to send Royal Navy warships to protect Ukrainian freighters transporting food

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has hastened an impending global food crisis, with huge quantities of grain and other essential commodities sat in storage as war rages on.

Ukraine and Russia together export a third of the world's wheat and barley and half of its sunflower oil, while Russia is a top supplier of fertiliser that has surged in price.

On Monday the Royal Navy deployed its newest aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, for a short stint at sea.

The 65,000-tonne behemoth is expected to head to the Mediterranean to continue with her role as a Nato flagship.
Italy sends minesweeper ships to deal with drifting mines in Black Sea
Romania Insider 23/05/2022
Italy announced that it will be sending two naval minesweepers to detect and disarm floating mines in the Black Sea. The information comes as mines meant to blockade Ukrainian ports drifted as far south as the Bosporus, threatening trade.

Early in May, the Romanian and Italian defense ministers met to discuss the consolidation of NATO’s eastern flank. During the press conference that followed, minister Lorenzo Guerini announced that his country would send two minesweeper ships “to serve in the Black Sea in the near future together with the Romanian Navy.”

Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia, and Turkey, aside from Ukraine and Russia, have access to the Black Sea and use it for international trade, shipping oil, and agricultural products. They are increasingly worried that their commercial ships will become collateral damage in the conflict, as sea mines drift across the water.

Last month, the Turkish navy discovered and defused several sea mines near the Bosporus, a crucial trading channel connecting the Mediterranean with the Black Sea. The Romanian navy also had to disarm mines that had drifted into national waters.

The problem is not new, as Russia’s efforts to blockade Ukraine’s ports involved the use of hundreds of sea mines. Some of those mines happened to drift away, pulled by sea currents. The Romanian and Bulgarian authorities asked seaside residents, fishermen, and transport ships to proceed with care and avoid any floating object.
