So Ashcroft's finally admitted that he reneged on the deal that elevated him to the Lords, and has been spending the cash he should have paid in tax on getting the Tories elected.
Hard to fathom how a party that was virtually annointed the new government by the press a few months ago could fuck it up quite so badly.

He was quite happy to get elected on the back of virulent homophobia from his own campaign team when he first made it into Parliament. That doesn't make him a gay basher, but it makes him a grade one hypocrite.

Talk to any UK manufacturer and they'll tell you that the single biggest issue they've faced over the last 20 years has been sterling's valuation, especially against the €, and prior to that against the DM and FF, the two biggest EU competitor economies for the same export markets the UK needs to sell into (other than arms sales...). Because of residual value patriotism and the political shitstorm that follows any forced devaluation, there's been little political will to give UK manufacturing and exports generally a boost by keeping the £ low. It would also help bring tourists into the country, which is another boost.

When I worked for a manufacturer, we used to sell to Germany in DM and sell to the US in US$, the rates used to change from time to time so we would get variable % profit on each market but we used to buy from Germany in DM which used to balance things a bit and we used to buy DM in advance to hedge our currency risk.

He is gay, he ran a homophobic campaign in 1983 in bermondsey, he finally came out a few years back just before being outed. Hence 'gay-basher' - a dastardly attempt to highlight the tactics that politicians will use.

I have long thought the reduction in British manufacturing was a bad thing. But it is wrapped up with the methods of corporate finance in this country. We just don't have a small and medium sized enterprise sector like they do in Germany. I think that is down to corporate finance which is geared towards getting companies onto the stock market rather than keeping them as faily owned enterprises. I am not sure what government could do about it.

right, the 1983 campaign was versus Tatchell wasn't it, I think Hughes was probably used by his handlers, and went along with it, rather than initiated all that nastiness, he should have known better though

Bermondsey by election in 1983, Hughes and his Lid/SDP mates ran an overtly homophobic campaign. Hughes sanctioned it tacitly or openly by doing nothing about it. It included male Alliance canvassers wearing 'I've been kissed by Peter Tatchell' badges. Stoking up the very homophobia that made him too 'scared' to come out....
Read 'The battle for Bermondsey' by Peter Tatchell. Also a few former Militant mates were in the Bermondsey Labour Party and they recounted numerous snidey remarks and accusations by the Liberals. That Hughes said NOTHING to stop this makes it clear that even if he was opposed to it he was happy to see it used if it gained him the seat.
to be fair both tatchell and the gay press have largely forgiven hughes for his er, past indiscretions.

Irrelevant when i'm using him to illustrate the shit that politicians are prepared to get up to - a gay bloke using/allowing homophobia -a black woman suing racism (and i'm not saying 'concerns' over immigration are racist).
I read the book and know Bermondsey very well! Some of those liberal/lefties also complained about Militant being homophobic. Have to say i have a lot of time for Peter Tatchell now. But at the time it was not just that he was gay, it was that he was seen as an anti bermondsey right on candidate chosen by people who did not have the locals interest at heart.
To call Simon Hughes a gay basher now is the height of stupidity. Many people i know in Bermondsey know he is gay and there views on homosexuality have changed because they think of him as such a good bloke.

It's not stupid, it's a matter of record. Hughes can't get away from what he did and he knows it. He allowed it to happen even when he was a closted gay/bi man himself, rather a sickening little episode frankly. Yeah, Tatchell made accusations about the Militant but failed to mention that when he was getting the threats, including death threats, it was Militant supporters who stayed in his flat overnight with him. One of those people was John Bryan who was selected the Southwark & Bermondsey candidate later on and also expelled from the Labour Party. Tatchell also withdrew his remarks about the Militant supporters in his constituency.

His team? What exactly do you mean by that? Of course some of the people who canvassed for hughes thought tatchells sexuality was an issue. Do you think years later that should be blamed on Simon Hughes? Do you think he should be called a gay basher?
