Things to look out for in Lidl and Aldi

The wine is great....love the wheat beer too (€1.29 a can and tastes like Hoegarten).
The wine selection now is OK as they've seriously upped their game to appeal to the middle classes (and compete with Aldi). Used to be dreadful.

Oh my that's hysterical. Worth the read people. I particularly like the way he gets to the point that they are levying a penalty and not a charge or payment for parking:

Deputy District Judge Melville-Shreeve said:
It seems to me you have, in this case you have a particularly hard problem because the deal that you’re offering people is free parking. There is no, there is no suggestion of any charge for any parking. So if your, your car park was perfectly managed it would be simply full of people who never paid a penny, either to ParkingEye or to the land owner, or to anybody else, it would be a car park without payment, a car park without profit, a car park without money. So, there’s no question, for example, of this lady, when she gets into her fifth hour, of blocking off a place that a paying customer was dying to get into, because there are no paying customers, so even if she stayed there for 40 years the consequences to ParkingEye would be of no financial significance, because she’s never going to have to pay. So how do you say this £85 could possibly be justified as a payment? I, I’ve read your principals’ evidence about this, but they don’t seem to address the problem of the fact that the car park ordinarily wouldn’t attract any payment.

And the final part where he orders ParkingEye to pay costs is just loltastic :D

Also highlights what a load of old bollocks the law is, just a constant game of one-upmanship really, nonsense.

E2A: I just noticed that mauvais made exactly the same point I picked up :D

I went a bit overboard with the Turkish yoghurt and ended up with two giant buckets in my fridge, so I made labneh. It's really fucking good! All you have to do is line a bowl with a muslin or I reckon a new jaycloth, scrape in all the yoghurt, add a teaspoon of salt (you can also add all kinds of spices of course), mix it all up, gather the cloth, tie it and hang it for about 24 hours. I rolled the cheese into balls and put it in sterilised jamjars with olive oil so it would keep longer.

oh that sounds lovely.. I might have to have a go at that at some point!

Pfft. Their dried Spätzle (rough-surfaced noodles) are fantastic - pretty much exactly what you'd get in Germany.
And how can you avoid ALL their pasta if you're eating their gnocci, you doughnut? :D

Sorry when i said 'noodles' i was referring to their Italian ones only - never tried the German ones.

Yup MrONS has been eating every night (with my homemade blackcurrant jam:rolleyes:) and I am a bit worried they are gonna stop selling it, he will be bereft. I have yet again managed to inhale packets of salami without really trying. And defo get the fresh chorizo if you see it as it was really really good.

What sort of consistency is it? Like a spread cheese?

That might make good christmas pressies

Are Lidl's frantkfurters and 'German' products any good?? Apart from the noodles recommended by VP, which I will be trying. Want to cook a Deutsche meal for my family.

Most of Lidl's German stuff is exactly what they sell masses of in Germany. The bratwursts, bockwurst, Nürnburger sausages are all excellent, as are the hams and cold cuts, and the breads and rolls. Don't forget to buy a jar or two of sauerkraut and German mustard for proper verisimilitude!
My neuro-psychologist, an expatriate German who has been over here for about 25 years, and who usually bought his German goods from a specialist shop in Knightsbridge (at Knightsbridge prices!), was a bit startled when I recommended he try Lidl and Aldi, but was very glad he listened to me (and his wife sent a "thank you" too!), as he was able to get much the same stuff for less than half the price, and their beer and wine selections are better. :)

Thanks - will do! Been browsing the sausages and cold cuts section recently and im gonna do a proper shop soon. The breads and pickles are really good! I also think the chocolate is pretty good quality :)

Yeah, like cream cheese. You can leave it hanging for up to 2 days (in the fridge if your kitchen is warm) and it gets firmer the longer you leave it. I agree it would make a nice present - am planning to put some in hampers :) I put some dried chillis and thyme in the oil and it looks quite pretty. (Make sure your jars are cold or the cheese goes all smeary on the glass  )

Some few mentioned the lidl bakery section already...it's a rare day that I can walk past without buying a couple of doughnuts.....easily he best I've ever tasted :)
