The Ashes 2019

Smith out plumb lbw without offering a shot. Wouldn't have happened had he not taken one on the swede an hour earlier.
Probably. It was a great bit of bowling though. Two consecutive balls pitched in exactly the same place. The first missing off stump by several inches. The second smashing into middle stump.

I reckon get Roy to get right into his ODI style- he goes so cheaply anyway may as well embrace it

Currently they're a 50-over side, playing a 50-over game and getting 50-over scores.

Sadly Australia aren't entering into the spirit and they keep playing Test cricket.

Wouldn't want to be chasing 200 on this pitch. ;)

Burns continues with his luck (three reds, not reviewed). Like I said, we'll take luck. We need luck.

Looking at the scorecard, they'd be better off putting that Extras bloke in instead of Roy

A target of 150 or more has been set for the final innings of a Lords test 41 times. 6 were successful chases, 22 were unsuccessful chases and there were 13 draws.

I fell asleep while typing that.

Anyway, this one will be a draw.

In terms of getting any of the four results tomorrow, I reckon 96-4 is about perfect.

My money would be on a result. 98 overs have to be bowled as well. No cut-off time.

A lead of 200? :D
Lead is currently 104. Four batsmen left. One decent partnership between two of them and a lead of 200 is very doable. England were lucky only to lose 4 tonight, but Aus only have themselves to blame for reviewing poorly and dropping catches. Make them pay tomorrow. :)

Cranked it up to 96 mph. On debut.
If these kind of stats are credible then that is just short of one of the ten fastest bowlers ever recorded.

Fast bowlers have a tragic habit of imploding into a mess of cartilage and ankle injuries, but if the young man can keep his body together, then England could have a world beater on their hands.

Smith came back out on adrenaline. But he couldn't hide the fear. He lasted 9 more balls, mostly pitched up by Woakes (including the one that got him) and scored 12 runs, 4 of them via cow corner, a most un-Smith-like stroke and 4 more through an edge. His arm hurt so much he admitted he couldn't play any forward defensives.

Bravery of the highest order, adding to his already undeniable status as the world's greatest batsman. But he's human. His shots after coming back showed that. A desperation to get on the Lords honours board (something else he has admitted). But you can't come back easily from what happened to him. Many lesser mortals (Broad) don't come back at all.

A spell to change the series from Archer? A spell from hell. Some of the most vicious fast bowling anyone can have seen.

Maybe Cummins bowling 10 short pitched deliveries to Archer (out of 11 balls) wasn't so wise eh?

Will Smith even be able to bat tomorrow? He's going to be sore as hell.

Batsmen are hit on the head an awful lot nowadays. Symptom of the increased protection - makes them less cautious, reduces their self-preservation instincts, causes them to play more shots and watch the ball less carefully. Smith played both the balls that hit him very badly. The one that got him on the arm was fast and straight, but not that short tbh, not much above stump height. The one that got him on the neck, as someone said, he ended up ducking into it. Again, it was fast and straight, but it lifted from not that short a length, which may be what got him. Bouncers are always a little slower than full-pitched deliveries as the ball slows when it bounces, and it bounces earlier in its route, so to get one to 93 mph is a phenomenal effort.

As to the fairness of Archer's bowling, absolutely 100% fair. His lengths were no different from the ones Cummins bowled first innings. If anything they were fuller. He's just faster and better at it than Cummins. Just too good. Maybe one or two batsmen need to rethink their scoring options when they face genuine quicks. Maybe the pull and hook are not clever options. The duck and sway might be wiser. And keeping your eye on it as well - Smith didn't do that. Not saying that's easy, but it's what the great players of fast bowling do. Archer uncovered a weakness in Smith's batting today, a weakness that perhaps exposes his shuffling technique somewhat, a weakness that perhaps only he and Mark Wood will be physically able to exploit.

And yes, maybe when Archer next comes out to bat, they might want to think about pitching it up.

TMS this morning quite rightly pointing out that the rest of the Australian squad are going to be a bit brown trouser about facing Archer if he can do that to Smith. We do need Jimmy back though otherwise we run the risk of wearing out Jofra. He said himself he's a bit stiff this morning.
