Should Tulse Hill in south London - named after a 17th century slave trader - change its name?

Well this adds to the mystery:

I have my kids' birth certificates in front of me:
A birth certificate for 2005 states District : Lambeth and sub-district Lambeth
However the "certified copy of an entry pursuant to the Births and Deaths Registration act 1953" for same person states"Kings College hospital Denmark Hill"

I do hope the state of Denmark was never involved in the slave trade, (nor any Kings for that matter)

So Bornthere , please feel free to post a scan of (part of) the relevant document to remove the confusion

I do hope Carter USM don't have to rename their back catalogue

PS I live in Tulse Hill - my quality of life will be undimmed by renaming it as something less contentious. Go for it. Personally I recommend "LTN hill", or "told you Brexit was a bad idea-ham"

You’ll have to take my word for it Nick. Lambeth hospital Kennington … Mother’s residence Tulse Hill, S.W.2.
How people believe cancel culture either rights any wrongs of the past or by eradicating history it never happened …. Yes, c’mon let’s rename everything, every single item that offends the ‘snowflakes’ why not …
Grow up for pity’s sake!

I’m still bitter about the renaming of Marathons

Is that the best you can do? Is everyone and everything associated with something in the PAST that offends or hurts feelings to now be obliterated? PAST is PAST. We should be concentrating on the Present and the Future & where possible LEARN from the Past.

It's not about eradicating history or pretending it never happened you twit, it's about people today choosing not to continue glorifying what was glorified in the past.

Would you have complained back in 1961 when the Soviets renamed Stalingrad?

Definitely no postcodes on any birth certificate I have ever seen.

Would all be cleared up if only mr snowflake botherer could load up a snap to prove his claims...otherwise...just trolling bullshit

Except for a lot of people their past quite plainly dictates their present and having links with parts of it in place names is something that can be changed easily and hurts literally no-one.

I doubt that the majority of locals or Londoners for that matter even knew the history behind Tulse ... Until recent publicity! Be honest did you know?

Tulse was part of the Royal African Company which traded in slaves from the continent until 1731! Do you know someone personally today who is claiming it had an adverse affect on their life? Maybe they should call it So Sorry Hill.

Not really eradicating history if nobody knew then, is it?

If they now change the name they will be eradicating history. Khan and his cronies should be investing in the young ... sorting out the gang culture and knife crime and not virtue signalling by making silly name changes ...

Seems the only contribution it's made to historical knowledge is when the people wanting to change it actually told people what that history was.

Anyway, you're ridiculous. You read like a spam bot being fed off of GB News Twitter posts.

And you Sir have no sensible argument just your version of 'insults'. GB News give great across the board views unlike the other biased news channels!

They do, from standard right wing ignorance to full unhinged loonspud. Something for everyone.

Ah. You're one of those.

How about almost every single person of African descent? Their lives were affected adversely by slavery and therefore the connection to Tulse Hill

Post codes introduced in Norwich in 1959. Rolled out in the rest of the country in the 1960s....at least according to Wikipedia.

Cheers- Louis MacNeice
The London postal districts date from the 19thC, but this is all so much fluff without sight of the claimed certificate.

If and when the troll does produce the goods it will then be possible to see why this possible name change must never go ahead...after all, what an insult it would be to born-again if they were left with a birth certificate that described their Mother's residence as the former place.

Perhaps we should rename London? - previously known as Londinium. The Romans conquered lands far and wide.
For almost 1,500 years, the Roman Empire romped all over the political and military landscape of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
If we go down the road of removing statues, changing place names ... where will it all end? Anything that someone, somewhere dislikes could be next!

Innit?
Plenty on here would argue for the pre-imperial Lōnidonjon

The lives of their ancestors may have been affected adversely. How many years/centuries ago are we talking? Are we going to live in a world digging up the past and continuously apologising for the actions of previous generations?! The only 'apologies' should be for the recent past e.g. .... the single mothers who had their babies taken away during the 50/60s ... but we're not talking changing the name of an area which has been called Tulse Hill since the 1650s!
