The rules were confusing, and they did change a lot. The annoying thing for him is that ignorance as a defence would probably work better for every single other sod in the country because everyone else did not happen to be the guy who was on the telly every other night with the job of explaining what the rules were. It's not so much the status of 'truth' that is up for grabs here, it's about the status of politics. Johnson deposited a stinking pile of shit and is now constructing a 'process' to deny the stinky thing that sits there in full view to this day. Him and his mates are pissing around with the definition of a 'party' amongst other things, taking us even further away from the real issue: it isn't about whether you call it a party, it's about whether people are gathering together, having drinks and the rest, in a confined space... in the middle of a fucking pandemic.

But this is the Emperor's new clothes, black as white, ways of talking your way round a thing that sits there in all its obvious splendour, alpha and omega level dishonesty. When decades of spin doctoring and routine manipulation combine with a politician who doesn't even have a baseline level of honesty or integrity, this is what you get.
