Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

Day has broken in Japan so there are recent and sometimes live images again, only just realised I can get NHK world on freesat. Just seen there PM who is off to see the devastated region and visit the nuclear plant.

Looking at recent earthquake data there really have been a silly number of reasonably strong aftershocks.

Hope they're all ok. My first thought when I heard about this was 'hope AS's inlaws(H's grandparents) and family are ok'.

So far the worst seems to be one niece staying over night in a school and my wifes sister being kept working for hours at lawson as people started panic buying nikuman.

Still no word at all from our family in the epicenter, We are going to try ringing again in an hour or so.

Keep posting. After that call.

So there were people inside those houses being washed away? Do you think they were screaming their heads off inside their own houses being washing away in a giant wave?
I was thinking that when I watched the footage of that town being washed away. Sadly I reckon there would have been people inside many of those houses. The thing is, many would have thought it safer to stay- tourists filming the 2004 tsunami were safe in their third floor hotel rooms. But this one simply swept the entire buildings away.

Not sure what that means in English but glad you've managed to find something out. Hope you get some good news soon

Lawson is like a 7-11. They all sell worse crap than tesco express. Nikuman is a hot dough bun you buy at the counter for about 50p.
To be fair I love them, but in an earthquake or any kind of disaster all Lawson could offer me would be nihonshu + biru, and maybe (well it is a crisis) cheap Shouchu.

Comfort food in a disaster is good, so don't feel guilty. I quite like the sound of a hot dough bun

Whatever they did wrong themselves they're not wrong in saying nuking two cities was cruel.

I wouldn't have a very high opinion of anyone who nuked me, frankly.

Nor would I. I'd be most pissed off, assuming I was still alive

What a lack of petrol? :)

Meanwhile...

Two volcanoes in Eastern Russia , Kamchatka and one other in Indonesia, have erupted around the same time as the Japan 8.9-magnitude Earthquake on Friday.

Meteorologist Kevin Martin is the lead scientist here at TheWeatherSpace.com and explains in his own way what may actually be happening.

"Waves from the Earthquake have been ringing the planet like bell, causing stress in all sections of the planet", Martin said. "Imagine a calm magma chamber that just needs one push, even if a few feet. This would be enough to cause instability in the chambers, causing volcanic eruptions in various locations. These three eruptions will not be the only mountains to go and other quakes worldwide will follow as the worldwide faults get disturbed.

The tsunami warning was issued a few minutes after the earthquake. The tsunami itself hit land around 10 minutes later I think

The news earlier stated that Japan got the warning 3 mins after the quake, the rest of the Pacific after 6 mins. However, the tsunami hit after only 10 minutes, giving only 7 minutes for evacuation or even getting the word out. :(

Kamchatka has kicked off?? You're fucking kidding me..

It would appear their is some volcanic activity.

Authorities on Russia’s far-eastern Sakhalin Island and nearby territories have evacuated some 11,000 residents from coastal areas in anticipation of tsunami waves unleashed by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off Japan’s north-eastern coast.

Regional emergency officials said the tsunami could hit several villages on Sakhalin. No damage from the quake was reported on the island.

Authorities on the Kamchatka Peninsula further north said the tsunami posed no danger to the area.

Kamchatka, which juts into the Pacific, is studded with active volcanos, some of which were spewing gases to a height of up to 19,000ft (5,800m) today, prompting authorities to issue a warning to planes in the area.

From elsewhere

The ITAR-Tass news agency quoted seismic expert Pyotr Shebalin as saying that there is a strong likelihood that the Japanese quake could trigger powerful quakes on Kamchatka or the Kurils over the next nine months.

These are in very remote areas.

alright, so I was three minutes out

Not much time to do much. I'd imagine your first thought would either be making a mad tear for it, or getting on your mobile and checking on others, not realising how little time you had left :(

Looking at the pictures, looks like coastal flatlands with no high enough ground nearby you could have got to in so little time, even if you'd known. Horrific :(

Ive been watching the new footage with horror, and comparing it to google map images to learn more about what has been destroyed. Its pretty terrible, but I think it is also possible that the tv images, in a few instances, make things look even worse than they are. There are 2 or 3 locations that NHK world has had overhead images of so far. Looking on google, sometimes there is higher ground not too far away from the centres. And the centres are often very close to the normal coastline so in some of these places the water does not remain quite as far inland as the images may make it look. The place that was all on fire in the dark and looked like hell is an example. One other location that looks pretty flat did appear to have some built up areas where tv now shows nothing, but my vague google map stumblings gave me a little hope that some of the areas were not so built up and were sometimes fields. Im having trouble matching any of the video of the final scenes of devastation with the footage we saw of the tsunami in progress. In any case there isnt much good news around these areas to cling to, I suppose the best news overall was that Tokyo itself didnt suffer more damage.

Just checked the early edition of the morning papers on the Sky website. Some of the tabloids are, as ever, playing the numbers game for the sake of sensationalism. Mirror: 80,000 feared dead. Express: 100,000

On a positive note, Sky just said a boat that was swept by the wave has been located and all 81 passengers are alive and have been rescued. Presumably it's the one reported through the day as missing.
