Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

All of the immediate family are ok though not all have been able to make it home yet. We were a bit worried about some relative very close to the center of the quake but we have just found out they are ok. We don't know how bad things were for them yet as nobody can speak to them, they just sent an email saying they were all alive. Yokatta.
Phones and power are still out.

What a relief for you both.:) My first thought this morning when I switched on was wondering how your lot were

Oh that is good news, hope they all stay safe.

I think the latest one may well be a separate quake and not an aftershock.

(given all this seismic activity is related it's difficult to tell but it appears the epicenter is not the same)

I thought they'd missed the biggest one off there. But then I realised there had been so many I was just going to have to scroll down a long way.

Hope everyone is soon accounted for for AS, gaijingirl and anyone else with friends or relatives there.

and if you go further down to the 9th and 10th March, you'll see there were quite a few before the big one

Hell... a significant earthquake under the sea every 5 or 10 minutes

So they're not causing tsunamis... but what are the odds on another 8+?

great graphic of tsunami waves spreading round the globe

You know all the cheery sites, don't you, minnie?

Probably more an interest from when I used to work at the Civil Contingencies Secretariat

A plane in America crashed into a deer yesterday according to that website. There's been an outbreak of chickpox somewhere and other outbreaks of meningitis and bird flu elsewhere. Very interesting you know

Amazing how many buildings seemed to have stayed up after this massive quake, the vast majority only succumbing to the tsunami.

A testament to Japanese engineering and construction regulation.

I'm sure San Francisco would come of rather worse after such a quake, we've had a few big ones over the last few years and they're overdue one.
