Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

Can see how strong the tremor was and how long it lasted with this video taken on the underground (better to turn the sound off)

this to me has been one of the more disturbing... if you watch the bottom of the screen, you see people driving their cars on the roads trying to get away from the water, turning around, driving into fields as the mass of water and debris and boats just moves so fast, chasing after them...the cars look like they're going very slowly in comparison but I'm sure they're not.

This is a crazy little video. Not so much in a destruction style, but more of a 'ooer, that's odd' style. The ground moving back and forth.

It seems most vehicles end up floating on top, I'd certainly rather be in a car than a timber house in that situation.

I still haven't heard from my language assistant. She's married to someone locally (in South London) and volunteers to help me at school 2x a week. She just went back to visit but her husband and family here haven't been able to contact her. Also still not heard from my fireman ex-boyfriend. Rikuzentakata is in his district and looking at the news from there - things are not good. I'm really beginning to worry about them. It's a wierd, horrid feeling - can't do anything at all but I really want to help somehow.

I sorry to hear that you are concern for friends and relations there. Of little consolation people here were worried about you too.

I'd forgotten that of course you know people there. Hope you have good news soon.

yeah...but it's hard to imagine that either scenario would be anything but terrifying and potentially deadly. That water's got to be very cold, and moving with such force.

It has kept seeming like through some miracle most people were not in those houses and had made it to higher ground, or there would be far more missing. I hope so anyway.

Your ex is probably busy putting out fires - hopefully. Have you tried contacting where he's based to see if they reply? How about that Google people search thing? Have you tried that?

I know that mobile phone networks went down and people have been able to communicate on the internet, but maybe internet is also not available in some places?

Fingers crossed all is well and you'll hear some good news soon

Another big aftershock, 6.2. And cooling on reactor no. 3 is reported to be failing.

No fucking respite...

The earthquake was so powerful that Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the Earth's axis shifted 9.8in [25cm]. The US Geological Survey said the main island of Japan had moved 7.8ft [2.4m]. Jeeze

WTF is going on....this is just mental....so sorry for all the people out there...It's almost apocalyptic.......well it is if you are there I guess....just fucked up!

Aye, it's so sad. :(

I woke up yesterday expecting the worst news had come on Friday, but it got worst with the explosion at the nuclear plant, and a very worrying few hours before it was confirmed as not being a major issue, and now the news that there's problems with this second reactor.:(

I am keeping my fingers cross for everyone in Japan that nothing further goes wrong, that most of the missing people are actually safe and that they can now focus on re-building their lives.

ETA:

OMG :(
