Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

BBC...
A magnitude 6.6 quake has now struck in central Japan, AP news agency reports, causing Tokyo buildings to sway. It is not clear if this is connected to the earlier quake and aftershocks. More on this as we get it.

I have just watched the footage. Wow. Apocalyptic stuff. One thing I don't understand though. The death toll is given as about 1000 and though terrible and I am sure it will rise considerably, it is still remarkably small for such a massive event. The biggest earthquake ever to hit japan!! Now I know they have great infrastructure etc but the death toll in the Tsunami of 2001 was in the hundreds of thousands across several continents. What is different about this event apart from Japanese infrastructure that has made the death toll (hopefully) so much smaller than that one and why has this Tsunami not hit other countries?

I am thinking because the 2001 Tsunami hit Indonesia, a poor country with little or no earthquake resistant infrastructure, with the result of a massive death toll but if I recall that event also whacked Thailand and several other countries with devastating results. This doesn't seem to have done that or am I missing something?

From the Wiki page, maybe part of an explanation

Relief agencies report that one-third of the dead appear to be children. This is a result of the high proportion of children in the populations of many of the affected regions and because children were the least able to resist being overcome by the surging waters. Oxfam went on to report that as many as four times more women than men were killed in some regions because they were waiting on the beach for the fishermen to return and looking after their children in the houses.[55]

At this point their death toll is only confirmed deaths, ie bodies found and counted. It will take weeks until they actually know how many are dead. We know a lot of people are missing, with reports going toward 6 figures. Though it's hard to say if that's because the communication networks are down and people can't get through to people who have been safely evacuated or if there is a genuine possibility that so many people have been lost, hopefully it'll be the former.

You have to remember as well that during the 2001 tsunami, many of the areas hit were popular holiday resorts and therefore full of tourists, and probably even more so as it was Christmas holidays. Also, a lot of businesses on the coastal areas catering to tourists etc. Not sure of the current weather in Japan, but Thailand, Indonesia etc. - much more outdoor lifestyles

(sorry, not put very well, watching Corrie)

PS: I'd imagine the fact that people there had never seen a tsunami and just stood watching it, not realising what was happening didn't help either, although I doubt that went any way to helping the Japanese as I heard that it was less than 10 minutes before the tsunami hit after the quake which means even if they did know there was going to be a tsunami, they wouldn't have had much time to get onto higher grounds.

I'd ignore that figure of 1000. Sadly, I reckon that'll probably shoot up

Yeah I am afraid it will rise considerably. I was on the beach in Sihanoukville in Cambodia with my son when the 2001 Tsunami struck and if it wasn't for Thailand taking the hit Cambodia would have been whacked and we might be dead. Thailand's tragedy saved us. If I recall properly the death toll in that tragedy began in the hundreds and then went astronomical over the following days.
Is there any news on the impact on other countries? I heard something about South Pacific islands being right in the path but no details.

Only a little bit of damage on Hawaii. Not heard anything on lower lying islands

Found this:

Low-lying islands that were the first in the tsunami's path – Kiribati, Tonga, Guam – ordered people to move 30 metres inland and look for refuge well above sea level.

By the time the great wave roared past those islands, communities on the west coast of America were engaged in their own disaster preparations.

Authorities warned that even though the first waves brought less destruction than feared to Guam and other areas, the Pacific rim was not out of danger.

According to breakingnews on twitter, 1 person killed and 3 others washed out to sea in Crescent City, California. If it is killing people there i am sure several other countries must have had some impact.

Fucking hell... just getting word from some friends - word coming through on keitai text (mobile phone) - no light or electricity and still having earthquakes. I lived 3 years in Iwate and a year in Sendai and still have some very close friends out there. Haven't heard from ex-boyfriend but I doubt he's checking emails, being a fireman/paramedic. This is just horrific and I just can't quite believe it. My language-assistant at school also went back home to Tokyo for a holiday and haven't heard from her either - although she's more likely to be ok. She's due back next week - I hope she makes it back safely.

Found this:

A tsunami from the devastating Japan earthquake hit the coast of California on Friday morning, causing significant damage in Crescent City, Santa Cruz and other parts of Northern California. There were no reports of major damage or flooding in Southern California.

Crescent City, site of a deadly tsunami four decades ago, appears to be particularly hard hit.

Local residents reported that about three dozen boats were "crushed" in the harbor and that surging waters significantly damaged or destroyed most of the docks. Ocean water surging up Elk Creek north of the harbor reportedly lapped up to front doors of the community's cultural center.

Id be surprised if the figure was anything less than 10,000 people and id be very unsurprised if it was considerably more than this.

I heard that people were lining up along shore there to watch it come in. You can bet someone tried to surf it too.

There were scenes on an American channel online of people lining bridges in Santa Cruz waiting to watch the "spectacle" of the water being pulled out and coming back in. So it's possible if anyone in America was killed it was either the foolhardy or the rescue services trying to protect them.

From AP David Applegate, a senior science adviser at the US Geological Survey, tells the Associated Press. He says the quake ruptured a patch of the earth's crust 240km (150 miles) long and 80km (50 miles) across.

Ihate to say this but in 2001 the original figures forte forst 12 hours were around 300 dead.. even after 2 days i seem to remeberit being a coupleof thousand.. was not till weks and weeks latr we got he true horror....

Sorry my keyboard on my new laptop is shit:(

It's hard to say without knowing the local populations. Maps suggest there is lots of relatively unpopulated coastline, perhaps unlike the west coast of the states. The real damage seems to have been in some of these smaller cities and the fact that the tsunami has come 10km inland. The footage of Tokyo is vastly misleading as most of the city is relatively unscathed by what's gone on - these outlying suburbs and towns are far more likely to have been hammered...

Does anybody know how long the warnings were given out in advance of the Tsunami hitting the Japanese coast. Thinking of those pictures of the wave washing away whole areas and the cars to race out the wave. In piece of footage a cyclist turns left down a side road about 40 seconds later that junction is ungulfed with the dirty water.

I heard only a few minutes
