Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

I know earthquakes are hard/impossible to predict, but is there any logic that if one plates shifts on one side it will soon shift on its corresponding the other? I say that because the Big One in LA is overdue, and Im wondering if this might increase its chances of happening sooner than later.
I don't know, but I would have thought that if a shift on one side has any effect on the other side, it would be equally likely to reduce the pressure as to increase it.

Oh dear - the BBC are reporting this

"The official Kyodo news agency is reporting that about 88,000 people are missing."

Hopefully many of those just haven't been make contact with friends/relatives if the phones etc.. have been down

I hope thats the case. The newer areas look ok, but its the older areas that you're going to see people hurt.

Big quake, and the aftershocks have been massive too. They've had a 7.4, a bunch of 6s and some 5s. Hopefully the fear of the tsunami hitting Hawaii and even further afeild are going to fizzle out and weaken as the day pans out.

Not crazy at all, I think the last time we had a close encounter with the moon was around the time of the Boxing day tsunami. If you want outside theories, then look to the sun too. We've just had an X class solar flare a few days ago, and i think there's another on its way. Again, you only have to look back a few weeks to the NZ earthquake, there was a large flare and CME a few days before that too. Combine the 2, and we could be in for a bumpy ride over the next few weeks. Obviously I hope this isn't right.

This stuff is absolute bullshit, with zero evidence behind it.

Which of course, you can prove. (not saying you can't, but just calling it bullshit, without citation, is just your opinion, and also, prehaps not the best thread to kick start the discussion, happy to play in another thread though) Also, those who are watching this, and using it as a new model to predict earthquakes, did predict a big earthquake for the next few days.

I was listening a freaky radio station last night when the news came in. They had a guy on who insisted that this is all related to a pole shift and that the Yellowstone Caudera was going to blow. His source for this information was some homemade equipment using copper wire and a 9 volt battery to detect "earth changes." If he's right and Yellowstone goes, it was nice knowing you'all. :)

The thing with the yellostone graph that I posted, is that any quake above a 5 or so, will be recorded on pretty much every seizmograph around the world. So we can stay calm for now......for now....:hmm:

Seems from that list of the earthqaukes in the last 7 days, it started building up yesterday witha sting of 5-6 tremors.....

Sure, I appreciate this isn't the best thread for it, and am happy to take it elsewhere. But it's really rather basic - we have a century's worth of seismographic records, and there's simply no correlation with astronomical factors. This theory that earthquakes could be induced by tidal strains was one of the earliest hypotheses to be investigated, cuz it kinda makes intuitive sense, but no correlation has ever been found. I'll look up some citations later, if you can wait.

Cheers for that girasol. I'm still happy to dredge out some journal papers, xes, but right now I've gotta do some work.
