Live from Hawaii

3:32 a.m. First Kauai Wave Come and Gone

The first wave has come and gone on Kauai, and while it was a relatively small start, that's just the beginning for the tsunami in Hawaii.

The National Weather Service says the gauge in Nawiliwili on the southeast corner of Kauai peaked at about 1.5 feet on the first wave and is already on its way down, though it warns we should "expect a draw down then a significantly larger return surge with the true peak."

"Should be a good gauge for the tsunami further down stream."

From BBC

California emergency management agency spokesman says the tsunami could generate waves of up to 6ft (1.8m) when it hits parts of the state's northern coast. "It is very possible there may be some evacuations here," Jordan Scott tells the Reuters news agency. He added that the area near Crescent City, not far from the border with Oregon, was likely to see biggest waves.

A friend is due to fly to Japan tomorrow with her 5 month old to visit family. She just told me if the flights are still on then she's still going. I wouldn't!

Seeing that receding is what saved my mums life in the boxing day tsunami, she sensed something weird was going on and instinctively ran up stairs in her hotel block and the next wave hit when they got to the roof

Would suggest southern Chile will get the worst of it....

tectonic-plates.jpg

I know earthquakes are hard/impossible to predict, but is there any logic that if one plates shifts on one side it will soon shift on its corresponding the other? I say that because the Big One in LA is overdue, and Im wondering if this might increase its chances of happening sooner than later.

Oh dear - the BBC are reporting this

"The official Kyodo news agency is reporting that about 88,000 people are missing."

Hopefully many of those just haven't been make contact with friends/relatives if the phones etc.. have been down

I was just about to post that QoG. I hope to fuck that it's just a case of people being displaced from their homes, and unable to report in. :(
