Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

I am trying to find out if the damage, and how much damage, extends to Nagoya. I have a friend there, and, at the moment cannot contact her.

7th largest quake in history.

As a small aside, hats off to those engineers who build those quake proof buildings, it really shows how amazingly well designed they are to stand such massive forces.

Oh oh...

The Tsunami watch issued for the entire western coast of the United States and Canada from the Mexican border to Chignik Bay in Alaska (see 9.24am) has now been upgraded to a tsunami warning. That means there is an imminent threat of a tsunami.

The strength of the tsunami will weaken over distance. Surely?

Most likely, but remember these things contain such power they can travel huge distances and still have an impact. The Boxing Day tsunami hit the east coast of Africa and still did some lesser damage and killed people.

Curiously they dont always just hit the facing coastlines. They can bend round the bottom of islands and still cause massive damage. Sri Lanka had that problem...

My wifes sister and husband and two of their kids are un-contactable but probably walking home. We have relatives in Miyagi, that is something to perhaps worry about.

Hope they are safe and well, I have a friend in Nagoya who I can't contact. I don't know how far she is from the earthquake and my geography is crap so the maps don't really help

Just saying like, but today's a good day to bury bad news. Eyes open and all that.

Of course for those of us with friends and relatives there, who we can't contact, a post like this really cheers us up. Cunt

They are trying to keep people off the phones for emergencies.

I've heard froma guy I know in Tokyo, took so long to get online because he had to walk home as buses and trains not running. Says Tokyo not that bad.

Hopefully it subsides before it hits the phillipines. :( their infrastructure is shite.

Due to hit there right now.

Hopefully with the few hours notice they've had they've managed to get folk to higher ground. Global technology is now so advanced, let's hope that it's being used for something that's going to save lives rather than lolcats and shit.

Of course, but getting an idea of the range of the damage, and the extent of the damage would at least give an indication of her likelihood to be safe. On my thread it would seem that she is likely to have been outside the worst of the area, and therefore likely to be safe.

Hopefully. Was watching a bbc programme about fishermen and boat people around there a few months ago. Would not want to be hit by that whilst out at sea.

Cant see the youtube but there is a video of christchurch doing the rounds as tokyo....

(edited eblows beat me to it.)

I can't imagine what it's like to be sat at home and suddenly this heavy shit comes down:

And more worrying:
9.53am: Some worrying news regarding one of Japan's nuclear plants from Justin McCurry:

According to Kyodo news, the operator of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in northeast Japan has reported an abnormality after today's earthquake, the industry ministry said. The system to cool reactor cores in case of emergency stopped at the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors of the plant, which is run by Tokyo Electric Power, Kyodo quoted the ministry as saying.

Stuart Weinstein, from the PTWC, tells the BBC World Service that coastal areas of Hawaii have been evacuated. He says Hawaii could be hit by a wave of up to two-metre high. He adds: "For South America, we are looking right now at a height of between half-a-metre and a metre, for some places on the US West Coast it might be around a metre."

And there's been a small earthquake in Hawaii. And something to do with a nuclear emergency in Japan. :(
