Mary Wollstonecraft memorial statue provokes mixed reaction

I'm so happy that the internet has a picture of this, it's the worst piece of public art i've personally ever seen, spotted earlier this year from a car in the outskirts of a town called Pilzen in the Czech Republic, surrounded by flats where people live, who have to see this every day. It is also huge.

tbf those big soviet-era blocks are generally much nicer inside than they are to look at from the outside. Do you know the locals weren't consulted?

It's not like they were short of statues. They could have just welded some big bunny ears onto a surplus Stalin and I'd have been just as happy

See, looking at the whole sculpture like this is much better than just looking at a close up of the uppermost part. It is easier to see what (I’m guessing) Hambling intended, as powerful women coming out of a surge of swirling forces, out of a struggle that then creates something magnificent. Whether it works as such is still debatable, but it’s still much fairer to criticise the whole piece and not just a close up from an angle you’d never normally get to see.

When I passed through newington green there were lots of people round the statue, its arrival hasn't passed unnoticed by locals.

My guess (and it is a complete guess, based on a type of person round here) is that they are old skool feminists who don't feel able to be publicly vicious towards someone in the sisterhood.

I like the nik nak. It’s the tiny woman that’s the problem. It’s a bad composition apart from anything else.
