London Mayoral Elections 2021

Yup. Brother voted for a Green candidate in Brislington who had recently tweeted "fuck all landlords" or something similar. Then there's this bloke. Let's just say there's quite a wide spread of beliefs in that party
My sister, who is Green-adjacent (we don't talk about this stuff loads so dunno where she's at atm) agreed with me that S H-R is a posh, dim twit. I heard recently that he refused recognition for his employees unionising which would fit the type. He comes from serious money and I think he'd be a disaster

There‘s a lot of them round my way, we have three councillors, it’s all NGOs and ‘international development’ types. I just can’t connect with that, it doesn’t sound like real work/lived experienc, just something you get to do with the right schooling and a non-practical degree. There’s also some legacy of the Hotwells end of things being full of hippies back in the 70s when you could buy the grand houses for buttons, still quite a few characters from that era around.

General tossers with a green wash. Why I don't vote green because I know these turds will always rise given the sniff of power.

The Clifton wards (boundary changes etc intervening at times) have made quite the journey from true blue Tory > Lib Dem > Tory again (briefly) > Green. Not to mention Labour apparently topping the poll there in the Corbyn GEs (no official figures but this what Labour types who saw the ballot boxes being opened reckon). They have some intelligent and committed councillors (I know one of them and he's a good bloke who appears to make reasonable interventions in council business) but very few who have much real connection to working class Bristolians. Carla Denyer is rated by them but it speaks volumes that someone from Easton now represents a Clifton ward imo

tbf I’m quite happy for them to eat the Tory vote. I have come across some of these NGO types (not specifically Green Party) and they have seemed quite sincere, genuine and ‘nice’ but there’s just that sense of disconnect from the way most of us live and get by. In the words of that twat: “says nothing to me about my life”.

Oh sure, I'm old enough to remember Clifton, Cotham, Redland, Bishopston all returning Tory councillors and then transitioning to Lib Dems. From that perspective I'm not complaining that the Greens are pushing both to the outer fringes of the city. But yes, no connection at all and frankly I don't trust them not to fuck council employees over a la Brighton, charge working class families £££££ to drive anywhere or simply forget that the outer estates exist (like Ferguson!).

And yes I'm aware that Labour are capable of the same but I hope less so

The London mayoral election is worrying me a bit. Holy shit, imagine if the tories had fielded a half decent candidate instead of that goon Bailey...

I think Khan has been fucked over by the TfL thing - lots of people blaming TfL's financial problems on him rather than the fact that income is hugely diminished due to the pandemic.
If the Tories thought they could win , they would throw in a big beast , Bailey was a sacrificial lamb , he's probably been offered a run for a safe seat somewhere.

During his tenure, I think he has been rather quiet and low profile and even more so during the pandemic. I think we need to see and hear more from the mayor of a major capital city.

dunno - i see / hear a certain amount about him and i'm not a london resident. it's worth bearing in mind that the usual anti-labour media bias is higher in london where until fairly recently, the nominal editor of the evening rag has been george osborne

Yes, and speaking to a few people this last week, all car drivers, they seemed stuck on the 'snarled up roads' issue and really seemed to be basing their vote against him on that single issue...I was talking about an 'on balance, all things considered' approach but nope...

The life of Brian..... :D :rolleyes:

Wtf. Talk about toxic masculinity. Mind boggling that he thought punching and kicking the shit out of a boxing punch bag shaped like a head and torso was a good idea and might be a vote winner, not long after so many women gathered for the vigil for Sarah Everard, in part protesting about male violence. Totally, completely and utterly inappropriate. In fact very scary. What message was he trying to send? I'm going to literally beat my opponents? Scary. Weird the way his mind works, thinking about eight and half minutes of punching, kicking and aggression is supposed to be somehow appealing and vote-winning.

The BBC London Election page posted yesterday has just stopped updating completely with the counts. Been like that for a while. Bit weird - what's the point of that.

It's very unsettling. I can't watch it again though because it makes me laugh like a drain...it's the squeaking and posturing.... :D :(

Is that totally his fault, though? In order to be seen and heard, outside election campaign period, when the media has legal obligations to provide fair/equal coverage of candidates (or something along those lines), the media would have to want to give him airtime. But there have been lots of newsworthy stories over the past year. If you're an editor, and you're deciding who you want your journalists to interview, political story space is often taken up by the dumpster fire that is national politics and the government's woefully inept response to the crisis, and more local stuff, people want to hear about how local hospitals are coping, are schools open or closed, etc.

Would interviewing/quoting Sadiq Khan have added anything to a story? Do people want to hear from a politician, or a doctor, or 'real people' and their experiences?

And of course, the Evening Standard has for years been edited by former Tory MP George Osborne and now Emily Sheffield (sister of David Cameron's wife Samantha), so I can't imagine they have much sympathies with giving a platform to Khan and any messaging he wants to get across.

Looks like Bailey's pro-car crap resonated with the doughnut. Luckily not enough. There are some weird constituencies. Barnet and Camden is very much doughnut-and-hole. All the way from zone 1 to zone 6. Salamander-like.

SK took his seat in County Hall nearly 5 years ago to the day. During that time I am not sure I have heard from him or pronounce on anything. Does he want to expand congestion charging, give free transport to all NHS staff or carers, pronounce on planning applications, close police stations....I know not, not in the run up to the election or at any time

Evening. Since I made this table for Reddit anyway, I thought I might as well share it here as well, lurker that I am. If anyone's interested, I've added up the 1st and 2nd votes for Bailey and Khan (from the constituency downloads on LondonElects) and this is how it looks so far.

The obvious caveat being that there will be a certain number of people who voted Bailey/Khan or Khan/Bailey, so their second preference votes won't count. But all in all, and entirely unsurprisingly, it looks like Sadiq Khan's taking the lion's share of second votes and is gonna win it with a decent 10%ish+ lead

Khan really trouncing Bailey on 2nd preference votes.

He has his record to stand on tbf. He said he'd freeze fares, and did. He introduced the hopper fare. And he is extending the clean air zone. Bailey opposes this last measure, I think, along with anything to do with tackling pollution from what I have gathered, so that's a practical point of difference between them.
