London Mayoral Elections 2021

Technical question. I'm moving flat on May 1 (still within London - different borough though).

I've already had my voter card sent to my current address and I'd prefer to vote by post, but am I allowed to vote by post from my current address even though I'll be at a new one come May 6th?

Yeah, go for it.

you certainly shouldn't lose the right to vote because you have moved house just before the election.

I moved house fairly close before an election once (think it was the 1992 general election) and I ended up with a postal vote for my old area being sent to my new address, so doubt this will be unusual. think it will be too late to register to vote at your new address (for the may 6 election) by 1 may.

i don't know how far in advance they send the postal votes out (deadline for requesting a postal vote is 20 april according to what i got through the door a few days ago) - you could just ask for a postal vote at your current address, but there may be a risk of the papers arriving at your current address after you've moved. alternatively, if you ask now for the papers to be sent to your new address, is there a risk they will get there before you move in and the current resident will either bin them or do the 'return to sender' thing.

may be worth contacting the elections people at your (current) council and see what they say

Thanks. I think I'll just request it anyway and if it comes it comes. Khan will get in anyway so it's not like it's critical.

Having finally read some of Brian Rose's policies I've come to the conclusion he has no idea what the mayor's job is and what its responsibilities are and the limit of it. He seems to be standing as some sort of all in one president and prime minister for London as a nation state.

Its bizarre.

You had to read his policies to reach that conclusion?!

I think he's confused the role of London Mayor with that of Superman.

Its the bits about education and the response to covid. He seems to think that's in his remit as well as enforced daily exercise for everyone. The fucking loon, he most be so exhausting to be around.

  • Deliver 50,000 new properties ready to move into by the end of 2021
Oh yeah? It's April, what the fuck?

I'm willing to bet he's a majority shareholder in a firm that makes cardboard boxes.

Had a look, took me four goes to switch off the video (with it's annoying blaring sound) and zap the pop ups. His policies. This one got me the most:

This one's easy. He's going to evict all londoners who appear in who's who and divide their homes (where houses) into flats and expropriate the owners of flats owned solely as investments. Job done.

In addition to the election for London Mayor, there are elections to the London Assembly, which use the same voting system as the Scottish Parliament, but for some reason London-based journalists seem to think that the Scottish system is unfathomably complicated and alien, while the London system is, I dunno, a tombola.

There are constituency elections, which are mostly two or three Boroughs squished together; and then the London-wide "top up" to bring proportionality into it.

I won't recreate the entire London-wide "top up" ballot paper here (you can find it at this link - Statements of persons nominated for the London Assembly (London-wide) | London Elects ) but I will summarise each list and the first ("lead") candidate for each list:

#1 Animal Welfare Party - People, Animals, Environment

Maureen Martin
#3 Communist Party of Britain
Robin Talbot
#4 Conservative Party
Shaun Bailey

Yes. You’re allowed to vote from the address you were at the previous October, which is when the register is first done.

But you also have time to change it, so you could vote from the new address. Contact the Council electoral services.

it’s illegal to vote from both addresses though.

eta - the postal votes will come out before 1 May.

On the same day we're having a referendum in Tower Hamlets about Mayor's - shit, not shit?

I have no idea what the answer is.

"In Tower Hamlets there will also be two referendums taking place on the same day as the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections.

All registered voters in the borough will be able to take part in a referendum on the Executive Governance Model.

This referendum will ask whether the council’s Executive should be changed from a Mayor and Cabinet Executive to a Leader and Cabinet Executive.

A smaller number of registered voters living in the Isle of Dogs will also be able to take part in a Local Neighbourhood Planning Referendum."

Tower Hamlets is getting increasingly like Switzerland with minarets. What's the chocolate like these days?
