id like to know more about that - how can a judge decide to block what is the usual avenue of defence? is it down to the whim of a judge or has there been a law change?

I can see your point, but tbf comparing Just Stop Oil with a century-old trade union confederation with a bit over 700,000 members isn't quite comparing like with like.
