Is Elon Musk the greatest visionary or the greatest snake oil salesman of our age?

I'd like to push back on the sentiment of reading his actions as "no plan"/ randomness / having a breakdown. It doesn't sit right with me.
What he does fits so many trends and ideological currents that are very live.

The disrupting attitude is real and born from tech disrupting but has direct political parallels such as in Russian astroturfing etc. What he is posting isn't that different really to what UK's new rightwing TV channels are doing, even if they are that bit more polite about it.

Fermenting far right ideology and working to give it credence has been employed around the world. It's an international movement designed at least in part as an anti socialist anti equality foil and to lay groundwork for authoritarianism and the coming openly total surveillance state ... this future is one Musk has said he wants and so we should believe him thats what he wants and the he is working to get it.

The other big current in tech bro circles is libertarian anarcho-capitalism. Naomi Klines little book here
is excellent on this for a real world example of the "libertarian" (i would call it anarcho-capitalist) future they are building , in that case-study in Puerto Rico. Musk is very aware of what is happening in Argentina under anarchocapitalist Milei, hence him and Trump visiting there first after Trump won.

The 4chan shit doesn't read to me as outdated nerdery, it gives real energy to making the above ever more real
I think there's a very real future vision here.

Everyone thought Trump was ridiculous and laughed at him first time around. He's had the last laugh. It isn't funny, it's effective. It feels similiar with Musk now. They are tactics that are designed to lead people used to the usual order's head spinning as to how to react.

Maybe he is just having a breakdown but I fear its more sophisticated than that. Could be a bit of both I guess but I take no comfort in it.

I don’t know but according to Companies’ House (yes, I was sad enough to check), he still owns 50-75%

Yeah, I just looked and saw 60% mentioned on Wikipedia (not that I’m considering that an authoritative source).

Lots of reports saying he ‘had’ relinquished ownership, but maybe all that means is it was a few weeks since he said he was going to.

I’d have thought at least someone in the media would have taken more of an interest than just to quote someone else’s article but maybe not.

As for Elon's 'plan', there is one insomuch as he's angry at the UK government for calling him out for being a racist liar and starting the riots in September. He would like to, if he could, take credit for destroying the British Labour government. Now he can't do that single handedly, but he can certainly help along the right wing print and online media in their campaign to do so.

I heard a story about him that seems to illustrate his need to swing his dick about, even at cost to himself - from a guy whose daughter got a tech job at I think Tesla. Musk came by, stared at her monitor, walked on to a friend of hers (also a woman, I think relevant) and proceeded to bring her up on a nonexistent error. This woman made the mistake of not cowering and apologising as she was supposed to to her Lord and Master, but actually doing what you should want from an employee and explained there was no error, therefore preventing the most senior person in the room fucking up her work by not being deferrential, so she was fired on the spot.

It's a bit similar with the Farage thing - if he understood what the fuck was going on, and wanted to mess with UK politics, he'd grasp that Farage is the glue that hold Reform together and that replacing Farage and/or splitting his party is actually contrary to what Musk wants to achieve.

The ‘mission’ in supporting various far-right outfits across Europe is the disintegration of the EU. Tech billionaires in particular don’t like the regulatory regime, the consumer-focused stuff like data protection, right to be forgotten, cookie regulation, anti-monopoly stuff, threatened clampdowns on tax avoidance/offshore finance and so on. So there is a lot of power and money aimed at this project.

In this they find common cause with the likes of Russia/China whose opposition is more geopolitical, hence the involvement of bot farms and so on, uniting against a common enemy rather than necessarily ideologically matched.

What they want is global capitalism without the soft consumer protections that bodies like the EU and US federal government offer. Think how bad RyanAir would behave with less regulation, that is the sort of world they are after.

Far too much discussion on Musk on Urban75. Last night he was even on the BBC R4 news. I think it is a mistake, feeding the ego.

Musk is one of the richest people on the planet, and he literally bought an entire social media platform. He's not some random nobody shitposting on the internet. That's not the kind of person who becomes irrelevant if you ignore them.

Musk retweeted this after Trudeau stepped down. (c&p from X)

Trump won.

Trudeau resigned.

Keir Starmer got exposed.

Nayib Bukele cut crime by 95% in El Salvador.

Javier Milei created the first surplus since 2008 in Argentina.

Masculinity is back.Great men are ascendant.

And just in time.

We’re going to need them.

He's a petty man that way, This whole crusade against Starmer is because Starmer criticised the role of Shitter in the riots. I hate Starmer but he wasn't wrong. Similarly, Musk hates trans people not because he 'cares about women's rights' like the fuckwit TERF crowd think, but because one of his kids came out as trans and Musk only wanted sons. He never wanted a daughter. Plus this kid was going against the path Musk had laid out for her and wasn't doing what he wanted.

A cannier man, or someone more au fait with UK politics, would realise that Farage IS Reform and that a lot of Reform voters won't vote for a football hooligan. (Also, 'masculinity is back'? Please. Trump isn't Teddy Roosevelt or Eisenhower.)

Fomenting. Unless he's starting up a brewery to rival Brewdog in the "Beer for Wankers" sector.

I was tempted to unleash my inner pedant, but in this case I think ska’s version works better.

Fermenting in the way sewage does, rather than the good kind. :)

I don’t think anyone’s arguing he’s a shitposting nobody or doubting his profile. How to stop his relentless floodtide of far-right bullshit, though? Deleting X & refusing to discuss ( not the same as ignore) is one possible approach.

Musk’s desperation to be the centre of attention is an Achilles heel once people get tired of this horseshit. Once the majority reaction is a rolleyes or outright laughter he’s onto a loser.

Bluster without power provokes both those reactions. Yes I know he’s going to be important in the early days of Trump- I think it’ll be max 12 months before he causes so much chaos and discord that he’s dropped. Ultimately he seems to be a friendless oddball and sociopath like Cummings, just with more money.

A long winded way of stating that no one voted for this cunt and personally I’m sick to death of his crackpot racism & ultra right tantrums dominating the news. It’s being made far, far too easy for him.

Starmer got exposed? 😂 The cunt needs the Father Dougal diagram to help him...
