Is Elon Musk the greatest visionary or the greatest snake oil salesman of our age?

My belief, for what it's worth, is that the 'rate limiting' "decision" is pure spin to explain/cover up some underlying issue that has developed probably thanks to one of Musk's genius decisions. I see people are linking to articles from earlier in the month like this one:

Twitter has reportedly refused to pay its Google Cloud contract - Endgadget (Jun 11th) (Archived)

I note that the problems began the day after that June 30th renewal date.

Of course it could be something else. Or that and something else. Or that and multiple something elses.

What I don't find persuasive is the idea this is the result of some "cunning plan" by the 'Tossler'.

Earlier in the week details began to emerge of the new CEO's plans to turn the finances around.

Linda Yaccarino’s vision for Twitter 2.0 emerges - Financial Times (archived)

She was the former head of advertising for NBCUniversal and the whole of the strategy being outlined is winning back advertisers. You can hardly do that if you are drastically reducing the possibility of people engaging with their adverts.

It’s quite incredible how utterly fucking stupid these people are.

Meta is working on one as well. I guess it takes quite a while to launch an alternative that works well and no one was really working on it when Twitter was working well as no one would’ve switched.

It is a little surprising though... I mean e.g google has so much shit going on you'd think they'd maintain a group working on a twitter alternative. Few million a year expenditure on the potential of cornering the rest of the advertising space.

Twitter don't pay the server bill and they're not paying their office rent. Don't understand why the servers don't get switched off and the locks changed like they would for anyone else

They never really died tbf, Reddit is a glorified giant message board, discord is a message board with liveposting and app integration, etc. Boards like these could probably sell themselves as minimalist decluttered communication for the discerning 2020s gentlebeing though ;).

Discord is basically IRC plus

It’s fine but it’s not easy to keep on topic or go back to your old posts

he’s been tweeting that the ‘rate limits’ are changing to whatever slightly bigger numbers, and for the first time I see absolutely no sign of his little army of adoring fans in the replies, it’s wall to wall wtf are you doing you imbecile.

I can't access anything at all. Completely broken for me.

E2a Interestingly though it works on my phone but not my desktop.

Plus like IRC, the contents of Discord servers are invisible to search engines. Reddit is/was one of the most reliable results when searching for information on Google, standing head and shoulders above all the SEO-generated dogshit. Seems like the current CEO of Reddit is determined to destroy that.

Yeah I couldn't have done my job without some old reddit posts or being able to ask terminally online IT gurus in the specialist forums.

400 posts or whatever it is does sound like a hard limit to reach tbh

Depends on what exactly it means to "read" a post. If scrolling past it counts, if loading the post but not necessarily displaying it counts, then I can easily see one hitting the 400 limit pretty damn quickly.
