Enda has finally called the election.

Election 2016: Parties set out stalls as three week campaign begins

My guess: Labor will just barely avoid wipe out. The blueshirts will be the core of the next government, which will highly unstable. FF and FG will do everything possible to avoid sharing government.

SF will do well, the question is how well. The far left in all its forms will continue to hold onto its niche but will not advance much beyond it.

None of this will solve Ireland's problems.

Any predictions for the campaign itself?

FF and FG to form a coalition. FG will have no other option. FF might have one. But I hope to fuck the Shinners resist the temptation.

Shinners were first up with posters on Tonlegee rd this morning.

Hope they do what some local wags did round here. They went round nicking the SDLP posters, then put them all back up... the night AFTER they were supposed to be all down and the fines for non-removal kicked in.

Are you heading for this Pegida thing in d big shmoke on Saturday Buckaroo?

Me and the eldest wee girl are in town so we might give it a spin. See if we see any gobshites we know amongst the naughty boys.

And meet a few old comrades of course.

We'll head to Moore Street too.

Always take an interest in elections at home, this one especially as I am looking to move back sooner rather than later...

Labour to get a hammering, Joan Bruton heading back to DIT Aungier Street to lecture in Economics like she's always done when not a TD.

Actually think FG will be the biggest party but will enter with the rump of Labour (maybe 7 seats) and Renua (who may get one seat). Agree that the Shinners will do very well, and I actually think FF might not even hold onto what they have.

For me the interesting thing will be how the AAA-PBP mash up goes...will they hold their seats? or make gains in places like Cork, Clondalkin, Dublin north central etc.

Ultimately I agree with Idris, nothing will solve the actual problems, but I'd be pretty pissed off with another Kenny, Noonan, Howlin mash up.

I'm hopeful the AAA-PBP mash up does just enough to avoid wasted votes. Any chance of a couple more AAA TD's people on the ground?

I hope Renua get wiped out, winning not a single seat.

A friend of a friend back home had Lucinda "Unleash the Creighton" Creighton come to her door the other night, I was told. LC went away with her head spinning, thanks to the bitter invective heaped upon her.

(For those of you watching in black and white, Renua and their leader are the one behind the blue ball - I jest of course. Renua are the new neoliberal party formed by blonde airhead TD Creighton, who left Fine Gael after a proposal for very mild and limited liberalisation of access to abortion. They are now promoting ideas like the flat tax, with all that that implies).

My favourite thing about the Irish elections is the lol posters. I hope this one doesn't disappoint.

Suspect Labour to get a drubbing. Hope after years of Brutal's performance in the Dail and her right hand man Alan Kelly's apocalyptical Sindo profile.

Alan Kelly: 'Power is a drug . . . it suits me' - Independent.ie

Surprised no one has brought up Joe Higgins who was for years the only socialist in the Dail and is retiring this year.

Interested to see how the social democrats do. Disagree with their politics on a large swath of things but Donnelly has been one of the most consistently sane economy voices in the Dail, and Catherine Murphy seemed to be the only person in Ireland standing up to Denis O'Brien

You've heard of creeping Sharia? Now Joan B. is warning of creeping Shinner-ia.

Joan Burton warns voters to ‘beware of Sinn Féin creeping in the night’

GERRY! meanwhile has accused Enda of thinking people are stupid (also mentioned in that link above). That one seems more credible - when I spoke to my mum the other night she said that Enda had been asked about something fiscal, and he had replied with something to the effect that it was too complicated for ordinary people to understand.

Would that have had anything to do with the story in this link, about all the parties save SF alone getting the sums wrong about the amount of money that would be available to the next government?

The phantom €2 billion: How everyone except Sinn Féin got the maths wrong

I actually saw her and a male partner (Her husband I assume) at a screening of Guys and Dolls at the IFI in Temple Bar, the Xmas before last. There was no sign of a Garda escort then, even though it must have been (surely?) after the Jobstown incident.

I think she'd be sort of safe enough on a night out minding her own business . With the politician hat on it'd be different .

Ah jaysus I just found out one of my exes is running in the election.

Nothing to do with any link on here I'll hasten to add.

Question for those of you at home: is the Regency hotel murder likely to be a major election issue?

This story here argues that the killing seems to have been unusually well-organized and "professional", meaning not only were police uniforms used, but also the weapons and the training displayed by the killers showed a very high degree of skill well above the usual "pray and spray" tactics of the average gangland murder:

Regency Hotel shooting was choreographed to send a clear and explicit message

This is also worth reading:

We seem to have forgotten the Special Criminal Court is supposed to be exceptional

Tbh they totally missed the primary guy they were looking for , failed to kill 2 they hit at point blank range ..one of whom discharged himself from hospital 24 hours later ...and 2 of them were bare faced on the hi def CCTV . With one removing his disguise before hed even left the scene . Not even wearing gloves either those 2 so their prints and DNA will be at the scene too .
Plus it was just a hotel, not a cop anywhere near it and their opponents unarmed .
They were heavily armed and flashy . Nothing all that professional about it .

As regards most gangland murders they tend to actually kill who they're after with minimum of fuss. This was the exact opposite. Maximum fuss, main target missed .

I think it's been a very quite election, the biggest scandal aside from this is has been the fiscal space bollocks. I think they (FF, FG, Lab) will use it to get the boot into SF. SF don't transfer well, they dont get second preferences (as a rule) and I think this will hurt them with moderates and potential Labour/FF voters they were trying to steal, but no I dont think it will be a major issue.
