International Cricket

Some great tests on at the moment. A packed Sydney. Sam Konstas slogging again, ramping Bumrah again, but just 23 this time. I think he could be found out with this approach.

It's bizarre watching these BBL players (Konstas, Webster) trying to come straight out of scoring at 200 to attempting the long form game. Konstas needs someone to have a quiet word. Equally all these test players will be entering the BBL next week. Gonna be a shock to the system for them as well.

It is shameful from the ECB, particularly as they refused to play Zimbabwe for many years and the Taliban are far worse than Mugabe. It's not like they're principled anti-boycotters.

I seem to recall the Aussies refusing to play Afghanistan a couple of years ago. At the end of the day there's though something like 150 countries under the ICC's jurisdiction and out of those plenty will be guilty of various shit. The UK sells weapons to Israel and the Saudis and we're still allowed to play.

I'm all for being positive, and I don't mind the ramps tbh. He's sensible(ish) - he won't play it if there's a third man in place. But some of his shots are just slogs. It will fail more often than it comes off.

Stokes does that sometimes. Comes out and nearly puts out his shoulder he's swinging so hard. He's better than that.

Yes, that's why the reason you give for kicking out Afghanistan should be limited to cricketing reasons if possible. The cricketing reason is very easy to justify - in fact, it's very hard to justify any other position.

I do feel somwhat for the players. Afghanistan's rise was so unlikely, a bunch of boys picking up bats and balls in refugee camps. But we're beyond that now, as the photos of the players with Taliban show. And tbh those photos are beyond disappointing.

Looking at this list, it's a bit of a rogues gallery. Dunno how many of these countries have a similar policy on girls/women playing though.

Later in 2021, the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan and promptly banned women from sport; consequently, there have been calls to suspend Afghanistan's ICC membership.[13] In 2023, Australia withdrew from a one-day series against Afghanistan to protest the Taliban's oppression of women in the country.[14] The same year, Human Rights Watch called for Afghanistan's suspension.[15] The Women's team, which was dissolved in 2021, has since written to the ICC requesting the formation of a refugee team based in Australia.[16]

I think it was Pat Cummins who insisted on Australia not playing. He at least is a man of principle.

The great Rashid Khan threatened to refuse to play in the BBL as a result.

“If playing versus Afghanistan is so uncomfortable for Australia then I wouldn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable with my presence in the BBL. Therefore, I will be strongly considering my future in that competition.”

In a statement, Cricket Australia said it was “committed to supporting growing the game for women and men around the world, including in Afghanistan”. It added that it would “continue to engage with the Afghanistan Cricket Board in anticipation of improved conditions for women and girls in the country”.

Bumrah out of the game for about a year according to the commentators. That action of his was always going to be a problem. Someone should have had a word a bit earlier. We've seen the same with Archer.

A shame.

So Bumrah finally broke four and a half tests in. And with that went India's chances.

A decent series between two flawed teams. I think Aus's batting frailties are still there and not convinced by Konstas just yet. SA are a young team on the up while Aus feel like an old team in decline. My money is on a SA win in June, although anyone can win a one-off test match.

That was a shocker of a pitch. Felt for the keepers, the ball was flying all over the place. I don't know why venues don't produce wickets that will last 5 days. Its in their best financial interest. That test should have been the NSW's biggest pay day and over in a flash.

Poor and unnecessary from Kohli:

Virat Kohli fined for Sam Konstas clash in Melbourne Test

The reason why Virat Kohli spent so much time pushing, shoving, acting and shouting during the test series that has just finished.

He is definitely a far better batter than these numbers suggest but performing in all 3 formats consistently isn't easy even for the very best players.

He was much better than that for sure. There's an increasingly large body of evidence that suggests he's not anymore though.

Given his current form if he doesn't quit now he'll have to improve dramatically or he risks going out having been embarrassed by Chris Woakes instead.
