International Cricket

Well, Mitchell's still in. And quietly averaging 52. And Ravindra's a dynamo. Let's see.

Although apparently tomorrow's a write off weather wise so NZ will need to go proper bazball here.

NZ with every chance of beating Australia tonight. The sort of fightback England don't seem capable of atm.

Aus need about 202 more with 6 wickets. All top 4 have gone. Smith is not having a good time at opener.

I didn't catch it but looks like they got unlucky. But have uncovered a bright new spark in Sears. Who is bowling pretty quick. And Ravindra is still impressng.

Jesus. Anyone else watching the IPL? That half time show er, sllightly over the top. I missed the opening ceremony but I imagine it was even more insane :D

Right it's the IPL but...the 1 in 100 memorable matches just occurred. Jos Buttler beat KKR by 2 wickets, needing 46 off the last 3 overs he made sure he faced every ball, scored the winning run off the final ball. Ended 107* in a completely 2-paced, well judged innings.

And a truly obscure pub quiz question for the future might be who scored 109, took 2 wickets for just 30 in a high scoring game, and still didn't win man of the match?

Sunil Narine.

But apart from that...the IPL has turned into a joke even the Indians are sick of. Bish, bash, bosh, roads, flat pitches and impact subs, all logical extensions of the concept, are producing baseball style games. For example, Delhi are currently 51/0 off 2.4 overs. And one of those overs was bowled by Bumrah.

It is fucking tedious.

Yeah takes a lot of the skill out of the game. Bowlers as cannon fodder, and only big hitting sloggers wanted with the bat. Sunil Narine is a tailender with a good eye. But you want half a dozen Narines in your team. Even Kohli nowadays scores too slowly.

The impact sub is a mistake. Effectively gives teams an extra batter. Not desirable in such a short format.

It's mildly entertaining. Quality bowling still does show though. That Bumrah spell was bad, but he's usually only going for 5 or 6 and over which is quite incredible in a tournament where most games seem to be topping 200. Cummins has been great too.

It is true that the impact sub has created more space for specialists. Rajasthan Royals have won eight out of nine matches, and their top six in the order have scored nearly all the runs while their bottom five in the order have bowled nearly all the overs. Arguably they haven't even needed the impact sub - their number 7 batter has been mostly superfluous. Hetmyer has played every game and faced just 36 balls so far (scored 70 runs off them, mind). You can afford to do that with the impact sub - if things go well, your finishers don't even get to bat.

Most expensive signing this year, Starc, is going at 11.5 per over.

The final about to kick off.... seems Cummins was actually a good investment

was briefly hopeful there - all I get is 'video didn't play' followed by requests to chat with someone and endless ads and links to things I don't want :(

England fast seam bowler Ollie Robinson has been hit for 43 runs in the most expensive over in County Championship history in what is believed to be the most expensive in all first-class cricket when there was no compliance from the bowler (i.e. bowling for a declaration). Despite this, Sussex beat Leicestershire by 18 runs:

I watched a bit of that this morning. Without Little, Ireland's seam attack looks a bit ordinary. Gumbie, in his first test, looks like a proper player.

It is a sad sign of the times that both teams are without their best player - Raza for Zim, Little for Ireland.

ETA: It's on YouTube in case anyone was wondering. Camera work isn't the greatest, but at least there are no porn popups!

Bangladesh about to wrap up their first ever win over Pakistan and only their seventh ever away win.

Pakistan declared their first innings on less than 450. England have done that twice recently and lost both games. First innings runs matter too much to declare on less than 500.

Now done by ten wickets. Can't be many teams who've declared then managed to lose by that sort of margin. Lesson there (and from England) in not underestimating the opposition.

From 26-6 in the first innings! Both wins have come from being in a bit of a hole in the first innings.

Second innings was the first time Bangladesh have ever bowled out a team without a wicket for the spinners.

Interesting article here about the decline of Smith and Kohli. Bit of a shame really. Williamson's numbers are still ridiculous but tbh I prefer watching Virat and Smith. They're definitely not accumulators.

Williamson just stays in and stays in and stays in. He plays the 'soft-handed edge short of the slips' better than anyone, and he more or less invented the defensive shot with a sharply angled bat. I did once see him bowled underneath said angled bat, but generally, it's a brilliant (and much-copied) tactic.

Shame about Kohli's decline. Smith? Ah well. Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke. ;)

I do basically agree, though. Watching Smith bat is endlessly fascinating. Unlike Williamson, what he does really shouldn't work.

I think it reflects his personality in many ways. Just incredibly understated. I don't know why sides dont just put two gullies in for him. He's not gonna bludgeon it to cow corner.
