Immigration to the UK - do you have concerns?

Well, I personally left Twitter when Space Karen took over, and have since deleted my account. But I’m not aware of a boycott campaign.

The S*n boycott is longstanding and credible, and backed by the Hillsborough bereaved. That’s not something to be trifled with.
Yes, it is true that, as far as I am aware, there is not an official boycott campaign of X, but many people have left it, including me. Using Twitter finances an organisation that incited racist violence on the streets of Britain.

Oh, quite. And I’m one who left for those reasons. But it’s more of an opinion than a boycott campaign I’d urge others to respect.

Seems like an appropriate reason to bump what was, at times, a fractious thread:

Net migration to the UK hit a record high in 2023 of 906,000 in a period covering Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak’s premierships, revised estimates show.

The measure for the difference between the number of people arriving and leaving the country then dropped by 20% in the latest period, the 12 months to June 2024, and now stands at 728,000.

The total for net immigration in the year to June 2023 has been revised upwards by 166,000 from the initial estimate of 740,000, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures published on Thursday.

The open borders things is disgusting from Starmer, what a cunt. Taking refugees from HK and Ukraine was the right thing to do. The HK thing is especially on the UKs list of problems they created
Effectively a massive racist fuck you from Starmer to anyone who has family / partner / friends who have come to this country to live, work or study

yes...also spineless...Boris Johnson to his credit made the case publicly that it was the right thing to do to let refugees from HK a UKR come here and didn't hide the fact it was happening...which is a good reminder to the public that there are real crisis from which people flee and are deserving of sanctuary.......Starmers tinpot right-wing hardman act is a barrel scraping attempt at populism from someone tanking in the polls and negates that important principle....
really makes me angry

Asylum is a tiny percentage of the figure of 906,000 figure. We could easily reduce the overall numbers whilst doubling the number of refugees we help out.

It’s quite something to be more disingenuous than Boris Johnson but Starmer is up to that challenge

I would guess that HK and UKR are basically asylum but they wouldnt have had to make an asylum claim

You could be right. Maybe being under a specific scheme it is not counted as asylum.

Would this mean that the recent jump in numbers since 2020 is a temporary phenomena?

Here are the numbers I (well, ok, ChatGPT) can gather regarding Ukraine and HK.

What are the yearly figures for people coming from Ukraine and HK?

Between 2010 and 2024, the United Kingdom saw varying numbers of arrivals from Ukraine and Hong Kong, influenced by geopolitical events and specific visa schemes.
Ukrainian Arrivals:
  • 2022: Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the UK introduced the Ukraine Family Scheme and the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine). By July 16, 2024, approximately 210,000 individuals had arrived under these schemes.
    Migration Observatory

  • 2023: The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimated long-term immigration under the Ukraine visa schemes at 108,000 by the end of 2023. This figure is lower than the total arrivals, as some Ukrainians may have stayed in the UK for less than 12 months.
    Migration Observatory

  • 2024: An additional 14,000 Ukrainians arrived in the UK up to July 16, 2024.
    Migration Observatory
Hong Kong Arrivals:
  • 2021: On January 31, 2021, the UK launched a bespoke immigration route for British Nationals (Overseas) (BN(O)) status holders and their families from Hong Kong. By June 2022, around 76,000 visas had been issued under this route.
    Office for National Statistics

  • 2022: The Migration Observatory noted that over 160,000 people migrated to the UK via humanitarian visa routes, primarily from Ukraine and Hong Kong.
    Full Fact

  • 2023: The ONS reported a decrease in arrivals from Hong Kong compared to 2022, contributing to a reduction in net migration figures.
    Financial Times
Specific annual figures for each year between 2010 and 2024 are not readily available. However, the data indicates significant increases in arrivals from Ukraine and Hong Kong in response to specific geopolitical events and the UK's corresponding visa schemes.

I'm serious. Starmer pandering to the right doesn't work because they still think he's woke. No matter what he does.
I think we will see an upturn in the support for the Labour Party in the polls after this press conference. Working class people and Lower class people are reluctant to leave the Labour Party and vote for other parties, the Labour Party is in their heart, they vote labour, their parents voted labour, , and their beloved grandparents voted labour. Voting Labour is a family tradition, a Inherited legacy, part of their identity. Combine that with a line in anti-immigration rhetoric and you will have Working class and lower-class people rushing back to Labour to give them their full support again.

Any evidence to back this up?

Also, what is "lower class"?

Long-term unemployed, Chavs, petty criminals, drug addicts, what Karl Marx called the lumpen proletariat

Lumpenproletariat

Used originally in Marxist theory to describe those members of the proletariat, especially criminals, vagrants, and the unemployed, who lacked awareness of their collective interest as an oppressed class." In modern usage, it is commonly defined to include the chronically unemployed, the homeless, and career criminals.
