Immigration to the UK - do you have concerns?

No, they are right. "Bourgeois" (without an "e") is a masculine adjective agreement. "Petite" (with an "e") is a feminine, and so wrong.
I hate myself for continuing this, but we weren’t talking about petit bourgeois. We were talking about petite bourgeoisie. It’s a different noun.

To be honest, I’m increasingly of the vote that maomao is right and we should stick with “petty”

English language brains aren't set up for gender.
As evidenced by my user name. I’ve been saddled with a grammatical error for quarter of a century. I hate myself every time I remember. Oh how erudite I must have thought myself, making a joke in another language. Hubris of titanic proportions. Every new day is an iceberg. But it’s a ship I’m going down with. The door isn’t big enough for Leo, so I’m not getting on there. Goodbye fair Ms Winslet! I was funny for two seconds decades ago! And me a pedant! Ignominy! Ignominy! They’ve all got it ignominy!

It is often used pejoratively though, it's naive to think otherwise. And I don't think it really applies to a self employed cleaner or a delivery driver forced to be self employed so their employer can dodge labour laws. They don't own the means of production unless you mean a moped or a mop, have no potential to exploit the labour of others and their interests are far more aligned with the working class than with a shopkeeper or restaurant owner. In many ways they are often the exploited workers of the actual petite bourgeoise who frequently employ people on an ad hoc and informal basis to avoid their responsibilities as employers.
Sure, ownership of the tools you use in your work is not the same as ownership (or more accurately control) of the means of production which is a social relationship as part of production under capitalism.

I like the putting out system an historic example.

The workers owned the tools but lacked the ability to effectively use them as means of production.

Labour list. Labour are going to work with Europe law enforcement to,
Our new Border Security Command is already gearing up, with new staff being urgently recruited and additional staff already stationed across Europe, working with European enforcement agencies to find every route in smashing the criminal smuggling gangs organising dangerous boat crossings which undermine our border security and putting lives at risk.

All sounds very hard line.

Labour list quote Amenity international response. Which I thought was good one. All this talk of security and smashing gangs. But where are the safe route?

“It’s dismaying to see the new Government reheating the last Government’s rhetoric over ‘border security’ and ‘smashing gangs’ even while neglecting the pressing need to provide safe asylum routes and a clear guarantee of asylum to refugees arriving here.

And I agree with this,
“A new set of ministers promoting an age-old message of fear and hostility regarding some of the most victimised and traumatised people who may ever arrive in the UK, means that smuggling gangs and racist and Islamophobic hate-mongers at home are likely to feed off this to everyone’s detriment.”

Labour despite it's massive majority still think any slightly liberal approach to immigration and being soft on immigration will lose them support.

Or as I'd think this is typical labour party.

Maybe their advisors believe that when people say they want immigration controls this is what they want. Could be right.

strange how labour are very happy to work with our european neighbours over this sort of thing but recoil in horror from schemes which would assist young people in moving around europe.

The visa scheme for young people up to 30 years old was reasonable proposal from EU. And it would have got support from labours younger voters.

Making clear they aren't even going to look at it says to Labours younger voters Labour are taking their vote for granted.

At some point given their majority I would hope Labour stand up to right wing media/ those who froth at the mouth over immigration and represent those who vote for them

There is some confusion with 'bourgeois' a collective masculine noun describing the class as a people which is correctly petit. Far easier just to always use 'petty' as English language brains aren't set up for gender.

Speak for yourself, I can speak a gendered language just fine. Gracie 😁

I think it works the other way around. Their huge majority allows them to ignore any objections that might come from what there is on the left in the backbenches.

Paradoxically perhaps, as we saw before with Blair, Labour with a big majority = more right wing.

Starmer & Co are right wing.

I suspect when they talk about European law enforcement they particularly have Frontex in mind, whose methods are, to say the least unsavoury. Here are some links:

Hi all, Thanks for hearing me out yesterday. Catholic priest Paul Murphy was stabbed in broad daylight in Galway last week. So I want to raise another concern, which is the attacks on Christianity. We've heard about the horrible attacks on Mosques upthread, but here is a list of Church burnings in the UK and Ireland over the last decade, from ChatGPT.

### Ireland:
1. St. Mel's Cathedral, Longford (December 2009)
- The cathedral was destroyed by an arson fire, and its restoration was completed in 2014.

2. St. Catherine's Church, Dublin (January 2012)
- The church was severely damaged in an arson attack.

3. Holy Cross Church, Charleville, County Cork (April 2016)
- The church sustained significant damage from an arson fire.

4. St. Michan's Church, Dublin (March 2019)
- Vandals set fires inside the crypt, damaging parts of the historic building and desecrating mummies.

5. Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin (August 2020)
- A small fire was set by an arsonist, causing minor damage.

6. St. Michan's Church, Dublin (June 2024)
- A fire severely damaged the crypt, destroying ancient mummies, including an 800-year-old "Crusader" mummy.

### United Kingdom:
1. All Saints Church, Fleet, Hampshire (June 2015)
- The church was completely destroyed in an arson attack, leading to an extensive rebuilding project.

2. St. Mary's Church, Ely, Cardiff (February 2020)
- An arson attack caused severe damage, destroying the roof and interior.

3. St. Matthew's Church, Belfast, Northern Ireland (July 2020)
- An arson attack occurred, but the fire was contained before causing significant damage.

4. St. John's Church, Little Thornton, Lancashire (September 2020)
- A deliberately set fire caused significant damage to this historic church.

5. St. Mary's Church, Wrexham, Wales (November 2020)
- The church was damaged after being set on fire in an act of arson.

6. St. Jude’s Church, London (April 2021)
- An arson attack caused significant damage to the church's interior and roof.

7. St. Simon's Church, Glasgow (July 2021)
- This historic Roman Catholic church was destroyed in an arson attack.

8. St. Andrew's Church, Glasgow (September 2022)
- A fire damaged the church's interior due to arson.

9. St Mark's Church, London (January 2024)
- A fire set by arsonists caused significant damage to the building.

Dunno about the priest but churches are generally not staffed at night and have long been a target for vandals. Is someone suggesting to you that this is a conspiracy? ChatGPT is notoriously unreliable when asked to provide factual information, could you provide your original source?

Don't rely on ChatGPT, not going to check all the others but the very first entry is wrong about it being arson

No apparent connection to immigration in the second one - do any of these have anything to do with immigration? Is anybody suggesting that reducing immigration would reduce church fires?

Homeless man Patrick Currie (49) was found not guilty by reason of insanity last month after a trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. His trial heard that he immediately admitted setting fire to straw behind a crib at the church with his own lighter and said he had done it because he was “God Almighty”.

“I am after burning that church out of it and now I am off to Rome to burn out the paedophiles” he told witnesses in a nearby hairdressers. He also signed his fingerprint consent forms at the Garda station as “Jesus Christ.”

I am tempted to work up some outrage about either a) calling salt of the earth plumbers and decorators 'petty' or b) the notion of genderless English brains, which I'm unsure whether is more offensive to trans people or TERFs
Go for it, pointless ineffectual outrage is where Urban75 truly shines

ChatGPT is not a search engine. It makes things up, because that's what it was designed to do.

And those aren't actual attacks on Christianity, and they're nothing to do with immigration. There really aren't any attacks on Christianity - it's just gradually losing its hold. And in fact most churchgoers in big cities are immigrants or second generation so it'd be even weaker if it weren't for them.
